I just turned 56 and I grew up TERRIFIED on the periphery of NYC in Mt. Vernon. We were talking hydrogen megatonnage back then. I lived in a seven-story apartment building and tried unsuccessfully to convince myself we were only in the blast zone and wouldn't be caught in the firestorm. I had every inch of the basement staked out and I knew every cubby hole that had a fallout shelter designation. During the Cold War, particularly the Cuban Missile Crisis, you were looking at being shelled with 3 or 4 100-megaton bombs. The terrorists have bombs tinier than Hiroshima so unless N. Korea's aim doesn't improve, if you live outside of Times Square, you'll live.
