Pray for NYC

Synopsis: While the town prepares to celebrate Halloween,
Gray Anderson returns after traveling outside of town and reports back on the horrific things he saw while he was away. Upon his return, Gray is able to provide more information about which cities were hit by bombs and which cities have not been affected. Having witnessed unspeakable terror, Gray is determined to protect the citizens of Jericho from danger. To this end, he wants to interrogate all the new families who came to town before or after the attacks, including Rob Hawkins. Meanwhile, Jake tries to negotiate with Jonah Prowse, who came back to town to retrieve a member of his gang who was arrested for stealing horses and food. Also, while overseeing Halloween preparations for the town, Emily tells Heather a bit more about her former relationship with Jake. Before Jake leaves town to find medicine for his father, Heather lends him her car and unexpectedly (and passionately) rushes into his arms and kisses him.

Episode recap:
Episode 7 starts by introducing Jonah Prowse, the leader of the 'gang' Mitchell Cafferty is part of and which Jake used to work for. He is also Emily's father. The man who helped Mitch steal the horses comes up to Jonah, who is staying at a compound outside of town. The member reluctantly informs Jonah that Mitchell has been arrested. Jonah responds with, "Well, Mitchel Cafferty is an idiot." The gang member tells Jonah that they were stealing horses from the Green's ranch. This seems to make Jonah extremely enraged, and he gives the gang member a burn on the cheek as punishment.

Back in town, everybody is getting ready for Halloween. Jimmy is guarding the prison cell where a somewhat disheveled Mitchell is being held. Mitch is acting as if he's expecting rescue, and keeps on singing, "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain" until Jimmy tells him to shut up.

Gail tries to convince the flu-stricken Johnston to stay in bed and not try to be a hero.

Emily and Heather (both school teachers) are overseeing the details of Halloween. Heather asks some questions about Jake and Emily, and Emily tells the story of how she and Jake used to go around as kids and trick-or-treat. The two of them would go through the neighborhood in one costume and then go in another, thus acquiring twice the amount of candy. Heather says, "Aw, it's just like a little Bonnie and Clyde. So adorable." Heather then gets serious and asks Emily whether or not it is inappropriate to be asking so much about Jake. Emily says it shouldn't be, if Heather is interested in Jake. Heather says she's not. "Well... except... yes. Maybe a little?" she confesses. She apologizes for the awkwardness, wondering whether or not Emily still feels for Jake. Emily tells Heather to be careful because "There's a lot about Jake that you don't know."

Jake's car (which was totalled on episode one) drives into the town square. It has been fixed up. Suddenly Emily goes pale as she sees who steps out of the car: Jonah Prowse! Heather asks what's wrong but Emily is speechless with shock and anger. Jonah walks into the town hall (where the prisons cells are) and goes up to Bill's desk. Bill says, "Hello, may I help... you?" He suddenly realizes it's Jonah and is speechless. Jonah says he's there to bail out Mitch. Jake comes in and says, "Let's talk bail." Jake starts suggesting bargains to free Mitch and get the stolen food back from Jonah. Jonah demands since when is Jake in a position to speak for the town; Jake doesn't answer, and the discussion is temporarily put off so Jonah can shout, "SHUT UP MITCHELL!" who is still singing in the background. Then Jake and Jonah agree that Mitch will be bailed out at eleven 'o clock tomorrow, in return for the truck full of food which Jonah's gang stole.

"And that's my car," Jake states.

What belongs to who was getting to be a fuzzy science, in the words of Jonah. Jonah then drives off (in Jake's car). Emily comes up to Jake and shakily asks why is Jonah is in town. Jake says not to worry, it had nothing to do with her. Emily snaps back that since Jonah was her father, it had everything to do with her. She begins to get upset and tells Jake how bad things got after he left. "He kept coming to see me; he was everywhere," Emily tells Jake. "He wanted me to forgive him for what happened to Chris. I will never forgive him for what happened to Chris. And now he's here, and you're here!"

Meanwhile, at the Richmond Farm, Stanley and Mimi share an interesting conversation of bickering. Stanley comes in from milking the cow, saying that since it was noon now, Mimi was awake. Mimi decides not to get into it, and tells Stanley that she found a bunch of cornflakes in the pantry. Stanley kindly fills her bowl with milk, but Mimi is disgusted because the milk was still warm from having just come out of the cow. Stanley then grins at his victory and gets the cornflakes himself! "By the way," he asked, "where's the funnel?". Mimi explains that she couldn't sleep last night so she reorganized his kitchen. They discuss "the triangle", the workplace that connects the three critical ares: sink, stove, and prep.

Gray Anderson has returned from Topeka!!! He tells everybody that things were brutal out there, and that many American cities had been destroyed by the terrorists. Hawkins is surprised when he hears that New York made it. Skylar is also very happy at this news, because it could mean that her parents were alive. But Gray also has rotten news: D.C. has been literally blown off the face of the Earth. Darcy begins to cry and Stanley gets dead serious look on his face; he was going to have to tell Mimi.

Gray hears the plan about bailing out Mitch and objects strongly to it. Eric becomes Gray's "yes-man", although he's not sure if that's a bad thing. Jake listens to Gray and decides not to hold up his end of the bargain.

That evening Mimi is doing her now useless paperwork. Stanley is serious and tries to be nice to her, but only manages to send all her papers flying in the wind. Mimi begins to collect the papers, Stanley tries to help, but Mimi says to back off.

"Look, I know what you're going through," Stanley tells her. "My folks died when I was 18 and the first few days---were bad. And I--"

Mimi stands up and shoves him away. "Everything I ever cared about was incinerated 4 weeks ago, and you wanna tell me you know how I feel?" she snaps.

"I'm trying to be nice to you!" Stanley exclaims.

"WELL STOP BEING NICE TO ME!!!" Mimi shouts. She says that Stanley no longer owed her anything, and while collecting papers she begins to cry. After a minute she can no longer stand it, and falls down on her knees and sobs.

That night, Jonah rushes into the jail and pulls a gun on Bill. Bill leads the gang leader to Mitch's cell and releases Mitch. Gray and Jake run after the fugitives, Gray gets a rifle, and is about ready to shoot down Jonah. Luckily Jake stops him. He says that Jonah can be very useful for getting specialty items that no one else can. "Now, we do this my way," says Jake. He decides to go see Jonah the next day and try to negotiate with him, but he has no car and the compound is ten miles away. Heather, however, has an old truck she calls "Charlotte", and is willing to lend it to Jake. Heather looks Jake face-to-face and says to be careful. "It's only ten miles," Jake says. Heather replies that she means be careful around Jonah. Emily told her some about Jake's past with Jonah and Mitch. Somewhat embarrassed, Jake drives off.

When he arrives at the compound, Mitch and a bunch of guys stare at him hatefully. About six of them, including Mitchell, begin attacking him. Jonah comes out and breaks things up, and then asks what Jake is doing here. Jake explains that they'll give him food and he can do business through Gracie Leigh, if only he will stay out of town. Jonah points out that the last time he tried to negotiate, it didn't work out well for him. But he says, "I'll think about it. Now let's talk about what I need. I wanna see Emily." Jake tells Jonah that Emily didn't want to see him, and that makes him angry at Jake. Jonah threatens to tell Emily that it was partially Jake's fault that Chris died.

"I already told her," Jake states. "Alright? I told her--I told her everything."

Surprised, Jonah asked, "...Did she forgive you?"

"No," Jake sighs.

"Well neither do I," says Jonah.

Jake tells Jonah that he'll talk to Emily, and then he leaves the compound. Jake returns to his house and finds Emily there; she is in a panic. They go up to Johnston's room and find him on the floor, not breathing. Eric is there and Gail is doing CPR. They all wait in a terrifying slow-mo minute, then Johnston starts to breathe again. April is immediately called, but she says that the town is out of antibiotics. (The reference to antibiotics suggests that April believes Johnston has acquired a secondary bacterial infection--with the cough he had, which kept getting worse, it may be pneumonia.) Sadly, she tells them that Johnston will die very soon unless they are able to get antibiotics. Emily leaves at once to beg Jonah for some medications, while Jake and Eric prepare to go to a nearby town called "Rogue River" which has a hospital. They would get some medicine and bring it back.


Jake and Eric have to take Heather's generously-granted, but very inefficient, old truck. Heather begins to panic for Jake's sake, afraid that he'll get hurt or killed out there. After she gives him a sweet and impulsive kiss, she leaves. But just then, Emily and Jonah show up. After talking with his daughter for some time, Jonah has agreed to return Jake's car to him. Eric and Jake quickly get into the car and drive out of town, on their way to Rogue River.

Getting ready for Rogue River:
After, they find out that their father needs medicine, Jake and Eric plan to travel to Rouge River to try to find it. Or else, the mayor won't survive. Heather lends her truck to Jake, but he soon realizes that this car may not be much of a hope.
Heather: "Well at least let me do some work on the car. Maybe you should ride on horseback."
Jake: "A horse is slower than that."
Heather: "A horse is less likely to explode."
Jake: "I'll take my chances."
Heather: "Well remember the gas tank is on the left hand side, so if someone decides to start shooting at you make sure it's not on that side."
Jake: "Okay, anything else?"
Heather: (Passionately rushes into Jake's arms and kisses him unexpectedly)....... "Come back in one piece."
Jake: "I will, I promise."

Emily: Why would it be inappropriate? Do you like Jake?
Heather: No! Okay it's a maybe, yes. Just a little bit.
