Morse code deciphered: A costly deal
Summary:
The wind-turbine blade arrives; April goes into premature labor and needs emergency surgery; Hawkins finds his past is catching up with him; Gray's position as mayor is sorely tested as people from New Bern drive a hard bargain for salt and food.
Faced with a catastrophic complication in April's pregnancy, Jake forces Kenchy to perform a heroic operation. -- From CBS.com
Episode recap:
Hawkins buries Sarah's body in the woods.
Hawkins is cleaning the blood when Jimmy the Sheriff arrives to ask some questions. Hawkins tells him that Sarah left for "family in New Orleans" - on foot in a snowstorm.
Gail suggests to April that she get some rest. April protests that she does rest -- on her office couch.
The men from New Bern arrive with the wind turbine.
Gray asks if the town can "buy" more turbines. Then, Russell (an associate of Heather's friend, Ted Lewis) and the New Bern Sheriff/leader, Constantino, ask for 500 pounds of salt plus 10% of the upcoming spring crop. Gray (and just about everyone else) protests that the price is too high. To which they get the reply, "Freeze this winter, or starve next fall; your choice."
April collapses. Then, she starts bleeding in the hospital bed.
No one can find Eric, who is out collecting firewood with Mary.
Mimi drops Bonnie off at the med center for her volunteering duties. The two have words, leading to Mimi volunteering to assuage some guilt and redeem herself in Bonnie's eyes.
Jake fetches Kenchy. Gail and the new character of a med student who arrived with the "visitors" (she doesn't like the term refugee), fills Kenchy in about April's condition - after telling him she'll call him a doctor when he doesn't smell like a brewery. He asks for an ultrasound. Gail miraculously finds one that survived the EMP somewhere in the basement.
Kenchy diagnoses April with placenta previa, which is where the bleeding is coming from. Surgery is the only option, but Kenchy protests that he's a surgeon not a butcher when Gail and Jake demand he operate.
Dale is brushed off by one of Gracie's customers who promised 3% of his crops as payment. He later, with a loaded gun and Skylar at his side, confronts the man at his home and demands payment. He receives his payment. Anyone else worried about Dale?
When Gray gets the men from New Bern into the mayor's office with himself and Johnston, the New Bern Sheriff ups the ante to 10% of the crops and 700 pounds of refined salt. Gray tells him no way. The New Bern guys shrug and start to walk out, only to be stopped by Gray capitulating to their demand disguised as a request.
Kenchy performs surgery on April with Gail and the med student's help. Bonnie and Mimi assist. Midway through, Gail protests that she can't hear the baby's heartbeat. The med student says, "This hasn't been about the baby for several hours." Kenchy says, "I'm trying to save April." The power goes out as the last of the diesel is used.
Eric is found. Eric arrives at the hospital, puts scrubs on, and is another body in the makeshift operating room. He holds a lantern.
Not long afterward, Kenchy rips off his gloves in the middle of suturing and says he can't do it anymore. He races from the room, Jake hot on his tail. They have a discussion outside the med center that borders on existential. Eric tries to get at Kenchy (to drag him back inside?), but Jake makes him go back to April. Kenchy tells Jake that April will die no matter what he does and that it is cruel to continue the surgery and she should be allowed to die with some dignity. Jake says he knows. Kenchy returns to the "operating room" to close April up.
Jimmy the Sheriff again shows up at Hawkins' home to inquire about Sarah. He happens to show up as Hawkins' is in the shed in his back yard lowering "the package" into a hole through the floor of the shed and into the ground beneath it. Jimmy asks to talk to Darcy, who is staying at the refugee shelter. Hawkins nervously agrees and carries a loaded gun in his pocket just in case. He preps Darcy only for a moment because she cuts him off and Jimmy interrupts. Hawkins waits nervously outside. Jimmy approaches. Hawkins pulls the gun slightly out of his pocket. Jimmy offers his home to Darcy and the kids, then tells Hawkins that they found a body. Hawkins looks twitchy. Jimmy shows a picture of the Hunter. Hawkins relaxes and agrees with Jimmy that Sarah must have had something to do with it. Hawkins promises to let Jimmy know if Sarah "returns" but doesn't think she will.
Eric is by April's side after surgery. Jake tells Gail that Eric is going to need her. April wakes long enough to say she likes the name Tracy. Eric agrees. April dies. Green family gathers around the body and cries.
Constantino demands ten men from Jericho to assist in the building of the wind turbines, but they're really going to be in New Bern as collateral. Stanley and Eric are part of the ten.
In the goodbyes, Stanley tells Bonnie not to kill Mimi. Bonnie doesn't find him funny and tells him he's all she has left. He moves on to Mimi, who tries to tell him she loves him but he says it first - then teases her that he can now hold that over her head for a very long time. Eric hugs Mary, hugs Jake, shakes Johnston's hand, then hugs Gail. Gail tells him they'll take care of Mary.
Before they leave, Jake takes Russell aside to tell him that if anything happens to any of the ten men, Jake will come for him first. Russell, somewhat ruefully, says, "I know."
The med student, calling Kenchy "Dr. Dhuwalia" now because he's earned her respect, offers a stethoscope to him to listen to the patient April was going to see before she collapsed. Kenchy steps in, deciding, for now, to be part of the whole - making use of the discussion with Jake earlier.
Quotes:
(Stanley and Bonnie, in sign language)
Stanley: "Promise me something?"
Bonnie nods.
Stanley: "Promise you won't kill Mimi while I'm gone, and you'll give her food."
Bonnie: "Why do you have to go?"
Stanley: "People are going to die if we don't get these wind turbines."
Bonnie (beginning to cry): "You're all I have."
Stanley (imitating Arnold Schwarzenegger): "I'll be back!"
Questions for next episode:
Q: What is really going on in New Bern? Heather's friend seems to be hiding some shameful secrets.
A1: (this is a prediction/theory) I bet that the guys from New Bern are keeping Heather hostage and now they're going to keep all of the others who went to fetch another wind-turbine hostage.
Q: What happened to Heather? Why didn't she come back to Jericho?
A1: (Refer to the question above) I don't think that Heather would refuse to come back like the one guy said (She probably would want to come back and see Jake again instead of staying there).
Q: What did Russell mean when he said he would never hold the 10 Jericho men for collateral?
A1: He was either sincere, saying that he genuinely needed their help to build the windmills, or he was being sarcastic as a way of saying "of course I would."
A2: He possibly has other uses for them in his own town. We've already seen mention of slaves in previous episodes.
Q: Are we going to see enough of the new character that we can start referring to her as Jessica Williams, instead of "the med student"?
A1: Look at 1.17 One Man's Terrorist
Q:Why are they sending Stanley, one of their farmers, to New Bern? Won't he be needed for food production?
A1: The ten men sent are the men who know about the fake Marines. they are going to help preserve the fiction that help is on the way.

Does anyone think that Stanly, Eric, and everybody else who went reallly went to work on turbine stuff. For some reason I don't think that is what Heather's friend was intending. My opinion- Jake is going to have to go to New Bern and go after Heather's friend.
