Morse code deciphered:
Who ran Red Bell

Episode recap:
Jake and Jimmy break into Robert Hawkins' house, where they discover a slew of fake IDs that cast doubts about the story Hawkins told when he and his family in Jericho. Jake holds Hawkins hostage at gunpoint, handcuffs him, and demands the truth about his involvement with the attacks on the U.S. while Jimmy waits outside for Jake.

Hawkins explains to Jake the story behind the attacks. He says he is or was part of a CIA team assembled to recover a stolen shipment of Russian nuclear warheads. The warheads were stolen several years earlier and split into small nuclear bombs. This was done by what Hawkins describes as a variety of extremist groups, including "domestic militia, anarchists, and religious fanatics." The groups involved, according to Hawkins, would never have worked together except for one purpose: to take down the federal government of the United States.

Hawkins tells Jake that he left his family and went undercover with Sarah as his handler, as part of Project Red Bell (mentioned in the opening Morse Code). He says he spent time in prison in an effort to become part of the group. Hawkins' job with the group was to provide them with fake IDs. He also proves his "loyalty" by killing an FBI informant who was about to disclose Hawkins' true identity. Before he has to kill the informant, Hawkins tells those in charge of the task force that he and Sarah could likely get their hands on a third or half of the bombs. Sarah pushes for more time so they can try to get to all of them. She is seen having a private conversation with the head of the government group, a tall, bald man with a cane.

The terrorists learn that the government has contacts in their group and move up the time of the attack. Hawkins is able to contact the CIA with license plates of some of the trucks, and they stop the bomb or bombs destined for New York City. Jake is skeptical about all of this until Hawkins shows him a map made by the Department of Defense showing death and fallout calculations for an attack on 20 American cities. Jericho was chosen as the rally point for the task force if the mission failed because it was away from any fallout zone and has access to an uncontaminated water table, a large salt mine, and lots of farms. He is further convinced when Hawkins shows him the bomb, destined for Columbus, Ohio, now buried under Hawkins' tool shed.

Jake does not tell Jimmy the truth but says that Hawkins can be trusted and that he is FBI. At the end of the episode, Hawkins puts more of the puzzle together, figuring out that the man apparently in charge of the CIA task force, Thomas Valente of the Department of Homeland Security, was also the "boss" that tried to buy the "package" from him in the previous episode. He is also shown in the end to be smiling at Sarah Mason during a conversation possibly revealing Sarah's involvement in the terrorist group.

Other stories in the episode:

Johnston is having a hard time dealing with April's death (and Eric going to New Bern?) and spends most of the episode in a deer stand. Gail brings him dinner after paying a visit to April's grave ... which, by the way, is already fitted with a beautifully engraved headstone. How the heck did THAT happen? In a fully functional, pre-bomb urban environment, it takes 3 months to get a headstone engraved and installed. Where did hers come from? I felt like the Christopher Reeve character in "Somewhere in Time" when he sees the modern-dated coin and is instantly transported forward to present day ... it had exactly that illusion-killing effect.

Mimi

Bonnie is apparently sleeping with Sean -- or, at the very least, they were found in the kitchen in the morning with few items of clothing on. Mimi attempts to exert some parental-type authority on the premise it's what Stanley would have wanted. Bonnie fights her. They make up somewhat at the end of the episode after Mimi kills a chicken and both pledge to make an effort.

Questions that have been answered:
  • Hawkins isn't one of the Terrorists he is (was) working for the CIA in an attempt to quell lost nuclear bombs
  • The bombs have been placed by a variety of Anarchists, and Extremists under one influential ruler
  • That ruler appears to be Valente, who works for the DHS's Nuclear Detection Agency.
  • Jericho is a "safe" zone, outside the fallout areas with a salt mine and plenty of farming areas the Hawkins' group was supposed to go to if their mission failed.

Questions for next episode:
Q. Is this true or is Hawkins lying?
A1. Given that the story was told in flashbacks, and all of Hawkins' evidence seems to be backed up by other events in the story (i.e. Victor Miller telling him of a "traitor" which seems to be Valente), all indications point to this being true.

2. Thomas Valente, how high is he in DHS (he is not the director)? Why is his reason for this? Is he planning to take over (he is to old)? Is he working for the Russians (a less powerful North America with many countries instead of the previous 3, will be good for the other superpowers.

3. Is Valente so dumb; that as any egocentric mind does not realize that large events have a large unintended consequences attach to them?

4. If he knew Hawkins then at CIA; why did they gave him a nuclear bomb; is it real or fake? Why they then want to get it back so much and so hard. Evidence against them?
A1. Fear of someone driving to Nebraska and nuke them.

5. Since DHS has failed to consolidate power back to the Federal Government, did he (Valente) fail (and now is just trying to cover it up DHS director is supposed to be alive because he was outside D.C.)? Or is he now the director (killed the real director) and now is the one in Nebraska doing deals with California?

6. Was the EMP done with the purpose of make difficult for the CIA unit to regroup or reach Jericho (meeting point)? Or was done to kill the director, just before he was supposed to do the TV message? That TV message will have been a very stabilizing factor that suddenly was absent.
A1. Maybe the EMP was part of the plan from the beginning. A country without communications is a lot easier to take.

7. What about the MIGs, is Valente working for the Russians and this is just the last battle of the cold war?

8. Why does (Valente) use a cane and limp, is this just revenge against the country that made him the way he is?

9. Where is Hawkins's storage unit located. We know he has several assault weapons located there.

10. How much ammo does the tank have? Main Gun rounds for a M1 is 40 but for a M1A2 is 42 rounds. 50 Cal ammunition is about 1000 rounds. M240 Machine gun is equipped with 10,800 7.62mm rounds. It also contains 24 smoke grenades. This is according to Global Security website. The exact mix between Sabot, HE and others is most likely classified.
A1. That is the standard load for a M1 tank... but the tank doesn't have any ammunition left. It's just for show.

11. Shouldn't they move the tank into town so that they have easy access to it, instead of locating it in Stanley's barn across the river?
A1. This step would uncover that the marines were lying and destroy all hope their cover story brought to Jericho.

Trivia:
A.K.A. stands for "also known as." This probably relates to finding out Robert Hawkins real identity. It could also relate to things we don't yet know about Jake.

Quotes:
(When Jimmy and Jake investigate Hawkins' house)
Jimmy: "He had one of those FBI badges. you think that's just coincidence?"
Jake: "Maybe he's FBI. Please tell you've thought of that."
Jimmy: "I have. And his family said he was FBI. But when they said it--I don't know-they had this look on their faces...like there was something they weren't saying."
Jake: "...Sort of like the look I have on my face right now?"

(When Mimi is trying to kill the chicken)
Mimi: "You have to understand. It's nothing against you personally. You're wonderful. But let's be logical. You're the one of all the chickens who lays the fewest eggs. And I distinctly remember telling all of you that this was going to happen; I made that very clear. And if you knew me...it would be very funny because this is so not my thing...this is Stanley's thing. Yeah. Don't get me wrong here, I just cannot eat anymore sprouts and I am SO hungry." (She moves forward with the hatchet, but then sits back.) "Here's my concern: I've heard a lot of stories about what happens when people do this...and I know if I see half of you running around I am really going to freak out. So if you could just minimize that part, I would really appreciate it."
Chicken: "...."
Mimi (puts hatchet down): "Sprouts it is."
