Morse code deciphered: One Got Away

Summary:
When Eric doesn't return from New Bern with the other men, Jake senses something is wrong and uncovers what their neighbors secretly have in store for the citizens of Jericho. -- from thefutoncritic

Episode recap:
Lots of trucks come from New Bern loaded with three windmills. They're early. Russell says hello to Gray Anderson and says that this is an "act of good will" on the part of Sheriff Constantino and that they brought back the Jericho men. Gray Anderson wasn't expecting to see the men back before the spring per the agreement with New Bern. Stanley comes out of one of the trucks! Mary comes and gives Stanley a hug and asks where Eric is. Stanley replies somewhat uneasily that Eric didn't come back, and he doesn't know for certain why he is staying in New Bern. Heather has not returned either. Jake comes up and he and Stanley are very glad to see each other. Jake asks the same question Mary did, but this time Stanley answers differently. He tells Jake that Eric has not been seen by anyone in three days, and that something weird was going on in New Bern, he could feel it. Stanley asked about Eric but no one would tell him. Then suddenly Russell came up and said, "Pack up; we're leaving" like it wasn't safe there anymore.

Jake starts to get a little worried and asks Russell where Eric is. Russell does not look Jake in the face and says "I don't know." Jake is not satisfied with any of Russell's answers and grabs him by the coat collar demanding, "Where is my brother?! Should I be worried? Answer me! I said should I be worried?" Russell replied that yes, Jake should be worried. Then Jake decides to go to New Bern himself and find Eric. Stanley wants to come with Jake but says he needs to get back to his farm and rest. Stubborn as usual, Stanley states that Jake is not going alone. Jake answers that he's not going alone. He's taking Robert Hawkins with him. Hawkins only agrees to go with Jake if they do things his way. Jake agrees.

Meanwhile, Mary is doing something worthwhile. She has hurt her hand working on the still. When Johnston learns that this happened to her while attempting to use her still to make some alcohol for antiseptic for the med center instead of moonshine, Johnston offers to help her and begins to forgive her for falling in love with Eric, but Gail is resolute and displays nothing but contempt for her. Johnston also tells a story about how honest Eric usually is.

Skylar is taking her half the salt mine, but Gray comes in and says this belongs to her parents and not to her. Skylar and Dale have the local attorney draw up papers 1) declaring Skylar's parents are dead (rather than missing) and 2) making her an emancipated minor which would allow her to take over the salt mine. Gray says that is wrong in every way it could be wrong, and brings Skylar to tears asking her if she really wants her parents to be dead. Dale defends her. The kids don't have any way to enforce declarations in the paper work, and Gray won't accept them, so they leave. Then Russell comes and suggests a deal with Skylar: he can help them sell the salt and give them 5 times the profit they've been getting. Dale and Skylar agree so Russell talks to Gray about it. Gray says never, but Russell knows that if Gray and Jericho voluntarily co-operate with New Bern over the salt mine, that a lot of tension between the towns will be disarmed. He warns Gray that "believe me, you do not want the alternative."

Jake and Hawkins arrive in New Bern. New Bern is town under siege. The road block to the town entrance has a gun tower with a heavy machine gun, sand bags, and barbed wire and about eight nervous, heavily armed men. Once they are in the town they see buildings destroyed and damaged by heavy artillery. They are told over and over again that this was what Ravenwood did to them.

Jake is showing nothing but impulsiveness in his wrath and worry. He asks Sheriff Constantino where Eric is, and he says he doesn't know. As far as they know, Eric just left New Bern on his own. Another guy says for Jake to face the facts, he could be dead or lying in a ditch somewhere. Jake starts to get violent, but Hawkins holds him back. The sheriff goes to a lot of trouble to convince Jake that his brother is gone and even has his second in command take Jake and Hawkins to the factory where all the Jericho men were working to see Ted Lewis who says that both Heather and Eric just left a while ago; it just took them longer to go. By now they could be back in Jericho, supposedly. Jake and Hawkins do not believe that pack of lies, but they go along with it because they know now that something is very wrong. Then when he shakes Jake's hand good bye, Ted slips Jake a note with his address on it, and a message that he should come alone.

So Jake and Hawkins go over to Ted's house trailer, and spot Sheriff Constantino's second in command staking out the place. They take him hostage and again ask what is going on. Ted says that Heather and Eric did not leave; they are still in New Bern somewhere, but he wasn't sure where. Ted says that if he didn't "feed you that lie" he would have been thrown in jail. Their hostage might know where Eric is. Hawkins threatens to torture the cop unless he talks, and the cop says he doesn't know where Heather or Eric are, but they are not safe. the sheriff has ordered them to be shot on sight. They allegedly destroyed a machine three days ago, trying to blow up New Bern's factory, for reasons unknown. Hawkins and Jake get ready to leave. Hawkins tells the cop to turn around and looks ready to execute him but Jake shouts "Hawkins." Hawkins handcuffs the cop to the drain pipe under the sink and they leave.

"Is this your way?" Jake demands. He is against Hawkins' methods and says, "What were you really going to do?"

"Less than you would have," Hawkins answers. "It's the idea of torture that gets results. Torture only works in the movies."

Then they were on their way again. They break into the factory and find a chalk board on which is scratched an entire inventory of Jericho. On the other side of the board is a map of Jericho, but the territory around the town is divided into areas each one with the name of the New Bern Sheriff and his men. Jake and Hawkins then sneak into the factory and discover that the New Bern is making loads of ammunition and getting ready for a war with Jericho. Jake gets impulsive again and decides to stop the factory. Hawkins tries to hold him back but this time it doesn't work. Jake is caught by the sheriff and thrown in jail. Hawkins escapes.

Back in Jericho, Stanley has returned to his farm. Mimi and Bonnie are taken completely by surprise, and both rush into his arms. Stanley says how much he missed them both, kisses Mimi, and looks up at his farmhouse.

"Totally back!"

To Stanley's horror, Sean Henthorn in standing on his front porch. Mimi explains what happened between Bonnie and Sean, and Stanley is thrown into a rage. Stanley is very mad at Mimi and says he only asked her to do one thing while he was gone. One thing, and she didn't do it. Stanley wants to throw out Sean, but Mimi says that would only make Bonnie "latch on" tighter. She warns Stanley that if Sean and Bonnie get really angry, they might run away.

"That used to mean you'd get call from them when they were out of bus money," she says, "but nowadays it means in a few weeks we'll find their bodies on the side of the road!" She says that Sean is a real pain, but they could deal with the pain in a safe way at home.

Stanley and the others have dinner, and he tells them some about New Bern. He says how sorry he felt for all the people there who were starving. Mimi promises from now on she'll only complain intermittently, and that she never thought she'd be grateful to live on a farm. Sean says that if the Internet was back up, that would solve everything. Stanley is exasperated at his sense of logic. Mimi points out to Sean that they still wouldn't be able to get food or blankets even if the Internet were up. Sean says, "Yes we could because you can order all that stuff." Stanley looks ready to throw Sean out, but Mimi reminds him that Sean has been very helpful with the farm work. Sean agrees and says it's kind of weird because he never did much physical labor before. He says that he's the kinda guy people just have around for his good vibes. Stanley loses it at that point. He grabs Sean by the coat collar and forces him out of his chair at the dinner table and begins to walk him outside.

"My house, my rules, my vibes!" Stanley says.

Mimi reminds him of what she said earlier. Stanley sighs and agrees. He throws Sean onto the couch and says, "You! Sleep here!" Later Bonnie comes up and tells Stanley in sign language that all men are idiots but you have to look past the idiot stuff to get to their true characters. Stanley asks "And where did you come by that little pearl of wisdom?" Bonnie points to Mimi. Stanley laughs. He tells Mimi that "If Sean Henthorn is my biggest problem, then I guess...I'm a pretty lucky guy." Mimi then signs- Do you want to get luckier- to Stanley.

Russell is still trying to convince Gray to agree to the salt deal.

Meanwhile, Jake is in prison in New Bern feeling. Eric is thrown into the cell across from him, looking as if he's suffered torture. Besides being starved in a prison cell for three days, he also looks very sad and depressed about something else. Eric explains that they discovered New Bern's plan to make war, and he and Heather made one last brave stand, an attempt to destroy the machines used in the factory. They got rid of one machine, and then they were caught. New Bern threw Eric in jail.

"So where is she?" Jake asks anxiously. "Where's Heather?"

After a long silence, Eric says, "...She's dead, Jake."

Jake's expression is one of extreme pain. He shuts his eyes and does not speak. In a few moments, some guards come and take both the brothers outside. Here, Constantino is telling lies about Jericho to all New Bern. He says Jericho tipped off Ravenwood about them, that they weren't holding up their deals, and so on. Then the sheriff brings out Jake and Eric and says to the people, "See these two? They are the sons of Johnston Green, sent here to wreak havoc on New Bern!" He then promises everybody that New Bern would never fall and that they were going to teach Jericho a lesson.

Hawkins watches unnoticed in the back of the crowd.

Questions for next episode:
Q: Is Heather really dead? I swear you can see her in the preview for the next episode.
A1: No, that's Maggie the fake Marine. Erin Daniels reprises her role in One If By Land

Q: Any predictions as to how Eric and Jake are going to try to escape jail?
A1: They blow up the jail and and town hall.
A2: Maggie the Marine is going to help Jake and Eric escape. She is going to be Jake's new love interest, especially if they have killed off Heather (although I'm skeptical about Heather being dead). I think that the "One got away" is Heather.
A3: One got away is referring to Hawkins. And as for the escape, it looks like Hawkins sabotages a mortar truck so it drives into the factory and then he rushes town hall when all the guards are gone.

Does anyone think Russel was really trying to help out anyone other than himself/New Bern? He kept on hinting at the impending attack by New Bern. He also seemed to imply that if Gray signed this deal it could help to stave off the attack.

Personally, I think whether the deal was signed or not that New Bern would come in and take what they want. Even if a quarter share kept New Bern off for a few months all it would do is give them more time to build more mortars. Eventually they woudl want mroe and take the rest of the town.

Seriously, they need to start playing the Shaft theme whenever he is introduced in an episode.

The show has been giving subtle hints that the country is not going to have a peaceful reunification (Black Jack, Semper Fi, Rogue River are all examples of this), so perhaps this is where we will see just how far the violence will go. Both sides have reason to fight each other: Jericho will want their people and the windmills, and New Bern will want food. This could get messy...
