First of all, ICBMs, such as the LG-118 peacekeeper or the minuteman III, are only launched to strike overseas. The W87 warhead, with the physics package, is designed to arm after reentry into Earth's atmosphere. This missile also travels at the speed of Mach 24, which would give barely enough time for its inertial guidance system to track a target within the US.. Submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) usually reach their target within five to ten minutes, and are equipped with a different guidance system for close range tracking. Whoever was targeted with these LAND BASED ICBMs seen in Jericho, is probably overseas, considering the TV producer consulted with the proper specialists. The way the show is going now, I doubt it. I laughed when radioactive fallout washed down onto Jericho and twenty minutes later they were drinking beers and running around soaking in the rays. A ground burst with a 20 Kt weapon would produce a terrible amount of fallou emitting alpha, beta, and gamma radiation which would be very unsafe for about two weekst. A ground burst is also very inefficent, and most of out weapons are programmed to detonate approximately 300 metres overhead of he target to maximize overpressure and destruction. Note that an airburst is much cleaner with significantly less fallout.

There were two missiles launched, there were two targets not destroyed. Shortly after, Hawkins asks "ours or theirs" concerning the targets. If you look at the trajectories of the missiles in the screen cap, you can see that they are both heading to the east from a location most likely in Wyoming or a nearby area. One is headed farther to the east, which is why its altitude is much higher. New York is a few hundred miles east of Columbus.

Wherever the ICBMs may have been directed, it is probable that they were fired blindly. The leaflet carried in the Chinese supply drop is probably asking Americans not to retaliate, and that the attack was definitely an inside job. We learn about this of course in episode 18.

I just want to point out some info in regards to the ICBM's Fired. They were seen travelling east. If the US ever launched ICBM's at Russia, China, N. Korea, Iran. They would not travel east! They would not travel west! If the missles ever flew at anybody except for S. America, they would fly North. Why North? By firing North over the pole, you cut down flight time and also early warning time. The earths shape reflects early warning radar from picking them up. Best example I can show ya, and I know it is a bad one, do ya remember the movie Wargames? Do ya remember the NORAD screens showing ICBM's coming down from Canada? That was accurate, they came in over the North Pole. Thats also why many of our EW sites are north, Gander Newfoundland, theirs one in Greenland, and their is one in Alaska. Iceland too I believe. Those missles more than likely did not leave the US (NYC, Columbus?)

or...the direction isn't really a clue at all it was just in the show to show that there is still action, and we're thinking about more than the producers did!

Why do so many people have trouble remembering that the EMP happened a while AFTER the ICBMs were launched? And as for all the speculation about the bombs being homemade or crudely assembled, that was put to rest in tonight's episode when Hawkins showed Jake what is inside the lead-lined barrel. It's a Soviet MIRV (Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle) warhead with an external trigger circuit.

just as an official gov broadcast was about to happen, the missles go and the EMP is seen. If the goverment message was to announce a president, who did it, ect. The EMP could have been used to silence the comming message. Any large announcement nation wide could have devastating effect on anyone else wanting to take control of the country

The Jericho article on Wiki says that Oakley, KS is the most likely real-life position of Jericho. So, I did a mapquest, and after comparing the Oakley map's RR switch with the Jericho map's RR switch, I found that the missiles are in fact heading north, not east. This could mean Canada, which is unlikely, or Russia, which has weaker detection capabilities along its north coast. It could picture a pro-Soviet faction launching nukes at US soil as revenge for grudges during the Cold War.

As noted by anonymous below, Jericho is probably Oakley, KS, with nearby ICBM launch sites probably controlled by AF Base in Witchita. ICBM would not travel either east or west. From Midwest, it is shorter and quicker to use the circumpolar route. Therefore, missiles are probably heading north. This route would have been used in an attack against Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact or China in the Cold War; now targets would probably include Russia, Ukraine Georgia (Europe, not USA) as these republics still control nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union, China, North Korea and Iran.

NK and Iran both had sanctions put on them early last year, and just recently, Kim Jong agreed to stop nuke processing. I really don't believe him though.
