What we knew about Mayor Green:
He had been the mayor for 25 years. He had a good head on his shoulders and wanted the best for Jericho. His experience in the Army gave him the leadership traits needed in times of crisis.
He almost died from an illness no doubt brought on by exhaustion. This sidelined his leadership for almost two weeks at a very crucial time.
He lost a recall election brought on by
Gray Anderson in the wake of Gracie the grocer's murder. Anderson's pushing the public fear buttons in the face of Green's "take it easy and maintain discipline" attitude was costly.
He did favor Eric and told Eric he was going to be a father. He eventually did regain respect for Jake once Jake showed he had the same strong will as his own. He was also stubborn and opinionated. He was a strong leader.
Mayor Green wanted to believe in Jake, but was afraid that his son would leave again when the going got tough, but was glad that they "buried the hatchet" after the first show. In the end, Johnston admitted to Jake that he was proud of him.
He loved his family and there was some history revealed that he was in a serious relationship before he got married to his current wife of many, many years.
His character represented the classic, strong, moral and disciplined rural American man straight out of the old show Gunsmoke. This probably helped him during his tour of Vietnam as a U.S. Army Ranger.
During the first wave of ground invasions by New Bern, Johnston Green was mortally wounded. He died on the Richmond farm, with his two sons next to him. His wife Gail got to the farm right after he passed away.
What we don't know: Based on the conversation when Gail tells him about April's pregnancy, he wasn't married to this other woman. Johnston's mother thought Gail was a home wrecker and wasn't happy with the relationship. (This probably is why, Gail was not happy with Mary, because she was a home-wrecker. Mary came in between Eric's and April's marriage.)

Quotes:Episode 1: PilotJohnston: "Hey Shep, you said earlier that you’d heard that speech before. You ever ask yourself why I say it? Because I happen to trust you people. I love my town. Now, something happened in Denver and Atlanta and it could be that we wake up and we find out that’s where it stopped. But until we know, are we gonna use our imaginations to solve problems or to cause ‘em? Now we can get the power back on, we can find out how big this thing is. If we have to we can fight, we can fight anybody, we fight all enemies. But the only way that’s gonna happen, is if we work together. Now go on home, we’ll meet tomorrow at the town hall. And folks, don’t you break my heart again."
Episode 13: Black Jack Mayor Anderson: “At current levels of consumption, we will be completely out of gas and diesel in two weeks.”
Johnston: “Wonder when the dancing girls show up”
Gail: “Stop.”
Johnston: “There’s a way of doing this without scaring the crap out of everybody.”
Gail: “He was elected. Guess he’s going to do it his way.”
Johnston: (groaning) “I’m gonna need a hobby.”
Johnston: “You don’t think I can watch your back?”
Jake: “Why, you wanna go?”
Johnston: “You’ve already seen what it’s like out there I just need to see it for myself. Besides I’m unemployed. I'm not obsolete.”
Jake: “Did you ask mom?”
Johnston: “Son, I’m 59 years old. I was mayor of this town since the Carter administration. I’m a retired U. S. Army Ranger and a combat veteran. Of course I asked your mother.”
Episode 22: Why We Fight Johnston: "What’s going on?"
Hawkins: "Mr. Green, I have access to a keyhole military satellite that I can use to track New Bern’s movements in the field today."
Johnston: "Beg your pardon?"
Jake: "It’s real."
Hawkins: "The one restriction is that no one can know where you’re getting this information. Tell them I’m scouting in the field. Tell them what you want but this satellite must remain a secret."
Johnston: "Sounds good."
Jake: "Wait. That’s it?"
Johnston: "What do you want me to say? I get it. The man has a satellite. Doesn’t want anyone to know."
Jake: "Yeah, but…"
Johnston: "I am about to go to war with New Bern, Kansas. The home of the nearest Costco. Today is already just about as weird as I can handle. I am not asking any more questions."
