I think that it would be interesting to learn Morse Code, but I would never be able to keep up with how fast that people do Morse Code. I really give credit to people that can do this in time of need and emergancy.

The morse code was what first attracted me to Jericho. Having learned it when I was 14 or so and using it in the service and as a ham operator from time to time, I was surprised to see a tv show using it as it is considered obsolete by the fcc and others.
It will be interesting to see how the show progresses as the season goes on.

Am also an Radio Amateur, but way before that I HAD to learn and know Morse code when I was 13-14 years old....and that was at school mind you. But I forgot most of it due to not using it at all, until I somehow got dragged into the world of Radio Coms. And I have to tell you that, even though I still know only half the alphabet, I still can't read the damned code at any speed. But the thing got under my skin when I was young and I'm still keen to know what was sent. Baby steps, but I will get there --... ...-- -.. --- -. ...-- -.- -..

That link was very useful. I was unsure if you use a / to separate words.

I have been using Morse Code for the past 35 years as a Radioman in the US Navy and as a Amateur Radio Operator. Hopefully Morse Code will never be obsolete since it is the most basic and reliable form of radio communications. Morse Code came through in the clutch in Independence Day....LOL.

Morse Code is still in use today by hundreds of thousands of amateur radio operators, both for hobby use and for emergency communications (in coordination with both government relief agencies, and NGOs, as you suggest)

As I do believe this to be valid use of emergency communications, did this not cease to be used a few years ago? I believe it is still a needed source for communications as even in the old west it proved very useful when the standard modes of communications are down. With nothing more than maybes some dead power lines rehooked at both ends to reciever system, one could actually communicate. Even the wireless system as was used by ships would be good too if it could be reinstituted. Personally I believe FEMA needs to branch out with aid from its CERT volunteers and have sub-station emergency facilities in small town areas beyond the big cities so as to have backup communications like this in addition to supplies on the ready. Do you all not agree?
