I am from the Seattle area and we have lived with the possibility of the power going out every time the wind blows. It happens every time. The wind blows, big trees fall on power lines. I have never seen anything to ascribe to the situation like what has happened in "Jericho". Sure, a few old ladies complained about not getting to have electricity for a few days and not being able to take a bath. WAAAAAH. Water washes whether it is cold or not. Fires in the fireplace for heat, candles for light, etcetera. The people most effected were those who lived in dwellings that were not equipped with fireplaces and relied upon electric heating. Big deal. A few days, not months on end without power. One time as a kid we lost power on Thanksgiving Day. Everyone with a lick of camping skills, or at least the resources to do so, barbequed their turkeys in the back yard or even made firepits and wrapped up their turkeys in foil and buried them in the fire pit. A few hours later... taadaaah!!! roast turkey and all the trimmings.. Not really a crisis. There would be a crisis only if there were catastrophic dam failures,(more than one dam) or widespread destruction of the power distribution network. A few of the local powerlines going down and a few days without power does not qualify in the range of National Catastrophe.
