Robert Hawkins - Jericho
Meet the actor: Lennie James

What We Know:

Hawkins seems to know more than he lets on. He claims to be a cop from St. Louis, Missouri, though his family appears to have lived in Washington, DC before the attacks. He's really a CIA operative. He receives messages from unknown forces, most probably Homeland Security via a laptop computer he keeps in a locked room in his basement. The laptop displayed Cyrillic characters and a website in what appeared to be Turkish in one episode.

Working for the CIA, he infiltrated a terrorist cell with Sarah, which was a mix of anarchists, Islamic Fundamentalists, and regional militias. He was able to get deep in to the cell, namely by killing an FBI informant who was about to reveal Hawkins' identity. It seems that the head of a Homeland Security office, DNDO, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, is in on the terrorist attacks. The plan, unfortunately, to stop the terrorists failed, as they launched their attack earlier than expected.

After the bomb, Sarah came in with the refugees, and took up housing with the Hawkins family. During that time, she was apparently also in dealings with the terrorists, or whoever is looking for Hawkins' bomb, but also killed an assassin that was out to kill Hawkins and his family. She ended up eventually betraying Hawkins, trying to get the bomb, and was killed by Hawkins' daughter, Allison.

He is an excellent sniper, and familiar with military training for marksmanship. (He instructs the men on the bridge to breathe before shooting, which echoes Army rifle marksmanship basics: breathe, relax, aim, squeeze.)

Currently, Gray Anderson believes Hawkins to be an FBI agent, though it seems he was a gay man instructed his daughter to plant that particular identification for him where the searching deputy would find it. His cover story was flawless.

As a member of the CIA, he knows trade-craft and has obviously spent time on what spooks, contractors and Special Ops types refer to as, "The Dark Side." He also seems to be the only one to recognize Jake's skill-set as being similar in some ways to his own. There is also a possibility that he works for the Department of Defense or Pentagon.

Robert Hawkins - JerichoWants to return to his role as a family man, provider, father and husband.

He has a nuclear bomb under his shed. The only ones who know about it are him, Darcy and Jake, the latter due to his "interrogation" of Hawkins. He gained the nuclear bomb after the terrorist cell he was infiltrating launched their plan early. He had no choice but to take the bomb with him to Jericho.

He obviously knew when the bombs were going to be detonated, and he knew where to go where it would be safe. That's why he moved to Jericho with his family.
His storage shed is a cornucopia of post-apocalyptic gear, a veritable survivalists dream locker. Included current issue HAZ-MAT suits, respirators and a small arsenal of weapons. His communications platform is state of the art and the sniper rifle he employed at the bridge is likewise. Fitted with a suppressor, McMillan custom stock, Leupold mil-spec optics and laser sighting, it could very well be the deadliest weapon in that county. Also knows Morse code and has a limited knowledge of eastern languages.

On the Nov. 28 episode we know that the agency has located him and wants to know why he "lied." We saw this via their satellite photo from his laptop.

As he is in the CIA, he has access to surveillance satellites and other high level security infrastructure. It's a dangerous, deadly serious world Hawkins has been living in the last few years and the CIA will probably come back to haunt him. He eventually utilizes his satellite access to assist with the fight against New Bern. While connected to the satellites his location is traced by those trying to find the bomb he has secured.

The season ends with Hawkins 'borrowing' the town's tank to try to stop an incoming train (from New Bern?) which he spotted by use of his satellite.

What we don't know: Robert Hawkins - Jericho
  • He seems to know who was behind the attacks, yet his actions show that he possibly doesn't know everything. Unless he is at the top of his company he does not know everything.
  • Have we heard the truth about Hawkins? Is he indeed on of the 'good guys'?
  • What does he plan to do with the tank, considering that it is out of ammunition?

His role in the town:
Works as a volunteer deputy in the Jericho police force. Saves the day when it suits him. He offers tactical advice on a variety of military related topics.

Family:
Wife: Darcy.
Daughter: Allison
Son: Samuel.

Defining Hawkins Quotes:

Episode 1: Pilot
"Look. I know you're telling people this was an accident, and I hope it was. But if it was an attack, sheriff, and there's chaos out there, you might not want the wrong people knowing Jericho is still here."

Episode 8: Rogue River
"Well why don't you just ask the question? Do you really think I was the mastermind behind the largest terrorist attack in the history of the world?

Episode 16: Winters End
Hawkins: "Jimmy, um, Darcy and I are having problems. She's moved out."
Jimmy: "Oh, boy. That's tough. A lot of people leaving you lately."
Hawkins: "..."
Jimmy: "I'm sorry. That's insensitive."
Hawkins: "I'll get my coat. I'll take you to her, Jimmy."
Jimmy: "Really?"
(Hawkins walks into shed)
Jimmy: "So, how are you're communication skills? You know, 'cause that's usually what marriage is all about. Honesty...love...I'd say it's fifty-fifty. More like half and half, you know? Uh, well, actually more like thirds, if you throw respect in there. But, not equal thirds, because honesty is more important than love and the respect...I think."

Episode 21: Coalition of the Willing
Gray about the mortars: "well having them and using them are two different things."
Hawkins: " Yeah, that's what they said about nuclear weapons."

Episode 22: Why We Fight
Hawkins looking at Stanley: "Hey, I'm going to need to borrow your tank"

Ep. 1.22 why we fight , Hawkin's Borrows the tank, and sees helicopters coming to the skirmish

Lets start with the facts:

Hawkins is using an laptop to connect through satellite with someone. The laptop is immune to EMP.

The first time we see him in the garden with the laptop we can see his login to a 29.203.39. IP Address, and as you can check by the RIPE-WHOIS / internet...

This IP is a US Army-military address.
That fact is showing us that Hawkins is working for the government

When he logs-in, the US seal can be seen.

When Hawkins is checking the flagged passports you can see an "NSA descriptor".

He has a history with the Haitian Secret Police, which we all know was instituted by Ronald Reagan in the 80's to fight an ever increasing drug trade.

In episode 12, he was given a packet by the terrorists along with his bomb which said "Columbus, OH". This, as seen above by the IP address, is the center node for the DOD information network (this is false reasoning, the physical address shown in the domain registration above is simply the DNIC's mailing/billing address, certainly not the "center node" for the SIPRnet - there is no "center node" of the SIPRnet. Further, the author has pulled the WHOIS info for the DoD's NIPRnet (non-classified network) registration; you won't find SIPRnet registration info like this ;) )(Yes, you can get this information - but not with WHOIS so I wouldn't call it false reasoning.), otherwise known as "the military Internet". His nuke was supposed to take down the information system which the military uses in a post-nuclear world. His avoidance of this issue proves that he is actually a government agent, inside the terrorist organization. He was unable to stop the act completely, as seen in episode 11, he was "surprised" when the "time-line for the attacks was moved up".
