The Nations:

Allied States of America
The Allied States of America was created after the attacks, led by a former U.S. Senator it is the strongest faction in what is left of America. It's borders extend from the shores of California all the way to Louisiana. The nations flag holds 21 Stars giving reason for us to think 21 States have joined the Allied States. They continue to try to restore order in the West.

United States Flag

The United States fell apart after the attacks. The nation is now thought to be led by the next in line for President of the United States. The United States is based in the East, the current Capital is Columbus, Ohio. Nobody nows for sure how many States have joined the United States. It is clear that the United States has less food, weapons, and fuel then the Allied States and the Texas Republic have.

The Factions - Jericho

Almost nothing is known about the Texas Republic. Texas has many people, crops, weapons, and fuel. This makes them strong, they may not be as big as the United States or Allied States but the weapons, fuel, and food are a big help to the cause. The Texas Republic continues to refuse to join either of the two major factions.

I don't see how these factions started. in the event of a major attack, there is a secretive government organization known as the National Program Office. it provides what is known as "continuity of government" in other words, a backup government if our constitution fails. In the situation that Washington is bombed by suprise (known as decapitation) an unnamed person would assume the presidency and IF NESSASARY could dissolve whats left of the congress, declare martial law and appoint all the officals he needs. I beleive that as long as our constitution is in effect (as is implied for the U.S.A), nothing could push the states to session. If under the N.P.O things become to strict, i beleive that american soldiers would have a hard time taking up arms against other Americans and therefore would not follow such orders. I also beleive that the American people would not allow things to get this far.

Well, it was pretty obvious to me after episode 18 who had orchestrated the bombs and for what reason they did it. It was a group of people who created the conspiracy of a 'terrorist attack' in order to shove the government into disarray. They used that confusion to fill a power vacuum that had been created in the aftermath of the bomb detonations (did you simply think it was coincidence that the EMP went off right before a representative of the USA, not the ASA, was about to address the nation?, the ASA government didn't want the people to have the information that the USA was going to give them). Anyway, the unfortunate thing is that most people, who are starving and freezing, simply want an end to their suffering. Most of the time it doesn't matter what history book they read or what their constitution says. It seems to me that this new government, the ASA is an ultra-conservative, militant, aggressive, imperialist, authoritarian regime. Although Classical Liberalism has it's flaws as well, I'd have to say that I'd stick it out with the old regime as best as possible. Another problem comes with the ASA military believing the lies that the government tells them...and as Beck says "[He] has the power to make this stick!"

Season Three has been projected to be a Civil War between Texas and ASA. But can you call something a civil war when ASA does not yet represent the underlying states it claims to represent? I guess that was why they were having the "constitutional convention" (at the Pasadena City Hall, if anyone knows L.A.). It was all handouts and pro forma yes-man responses, not a real convention, as Gray stated. (What does that remind us of? Two things for me: the USA Patriot Act that the anthrax-dusted Congress had no time to read before signing and the California gubernatorial circus which removed another Gray -- Davis -- to replace him with Arnie).. Yes, when the power people get moving, and the corporate ones at that, they can use steamroller tactics. Guess Texas was offended! And because their SOVEREIGNTY was violated in the attempted downing of Jake Green's plane, they had to act. Otherwise, their sovereignty was toast. Now does this HAVE to lead to Civil War? I suppose that if ASA has really turned itself into a nation, and the convening states have signed on their horrible new phony constitution, thus giving away their inheritance for a mess of gobbledegook, then they have signed their own death warrants. It will not be easy on them or on anyone else. Not when people like Beck have seen the light. Where can Jennings and Rall find their Robert E. Lee? Probably won't. They'll try to win by air power or something.
