The "package"

• Robert Hawkins has a 55-gallon drum containing a nuclear bomb hidden underground in his tool shed outside. It is known as "the package."

• The drum itself is made of lead, which would prevent radiation leakage
  
• The "package" was removed from behind the block wall in (Ep. 1.15) after Sarah Mason held Hawkins' family at gunpoint to get her hands on it.
• The bomb is the key because the parts and component will identify who made it and where it came from. The isotopes in the radioactive material will help determine their origin. Remember you can not buy these things at K-Mart

  • A possible intended target for this bomb was Hill AFB in Clearfield UT.   • Another possible target was the Hoover dam. Besides providing vast amounts of electricity it provides water all the way to California.
  • St. George is a massive distribution hub for Wal-Mart (and possibly other major retailers). Taking out the warehouses there could essentially "starve" the West Coast as the blast would destroy thousands of tons of non-perishable food - thus making the rebuilding effort more difficult.

The Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP)

• There was an air-burst EMP over the United States most likely caused by in-bound ICBM. (Ep. 1.06)

• EMP can have a very wide range depending on the location of the blast. By location, this means in relation to height above ground level.
  
  • An episode of Countdown refers to "Starfish Prime," which was a high altitude nuclear test conducted by DASA (Defense Atomic Support Agency) and the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) on July 9, 1962. During this test, a W49 Thermonuclear warhead, approximately 1.4 megaton, was detonated 400 km (248 miles) above Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. The effects of the resultant EMP were felt in Hawaii (according to the Countdown Episode), over 1500 km away, and the aurora was visible on the Samoan Islands, over 3200 km away according to some sources. In Hawaii, streetlights went out and power lines were fused. The resulting radiation pulse in the atmosphere was believed to have disabled 1/3 of the low Earth-orbiting satellites at that time.
  • An EMP blast from current warheads, if done in the correct position, could effectively disable a vast amount of unshielded electronics in the continental U.S.

• Where or what is Lawrence? A town or a river? Is this from the "Rogue River" episode?
• Lawrence is a city in Kansas. Presumably this is a nod to the movie "The Day After," a 1983 movie about the days following a nuclear attack on the US.
  

• I am not buying the fallout from Lawrence story. If fallout were to reach this area of the state that would mean that a wind from the east would have had to have been blowing for a considerable amount of time. We usually do not get easterly winds in Kansas. Winds blow from the SW, W, or NW. We do occasionally get an easterly wind, but nothing that would carry fallout across the state.
• If Lawrence was hit, then why? Lawrence is the home to KU, which is not mentioned. KU has both medical and law schools but I'm not sure why Lawrence would be a target. Manhattan, home to KSU which does bioag research and bioterrorism research, would be a more likely target. Manhattan is not mentioned. I believe it is also a bit larger than Lawrence. Lawrence is about half an hour from Topeka, which has been mentioned several times.
• Lawrence, due to it's proximity to Fort Leavenworth and Kansas City, and the generally West-Northwest winds, fallout would contaminate both locations, resulting in numerous deaths from radiation poisoning. Parts of Johnson, Miami, Douglas, and Franklin counties on the Kansas side would receive lowered amounts of fallout due to a meteorological phenomenon known as the Tonganoxie Split, though it would still be lethal to those living within the area. Also, Kansas City is listed as the 22nd Largest City in the United States, with over 5 million people living in the area.
• There is two possibilities for why Lawrence. One is a compromised attempt on Whiteman AFB. It's home to the 509th Wing (B-2s) and is thus, nuclear capable. Another is that it was a compromised attempt on Kansas City. Kansas City isn't just a population center, it's a major north-south transportation hub as well as east-west. There is also the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. And there is one other wrinkle on the Kansas side, the Kansas City Plant of the National Nuclear Security Agency (Link here). Here they manufacture Permissive Action Link equipment among other things. (What is a Permissive Action Link?)
  

• When he was in the shower after helping Victor, he had dog-tags around his neck.
  (They could be his Grandfathers who was a Ranger in WW II, Jake could have just added rubber silencers on them, also the chain looked a little long and there is usually a added piece of chain for the 2nd tag so it hangs lower I believe.[American contractors in a war zone wear Dog tags for the same reason military personal do and the second chain is one of a number of way to where tags])

• These are likely Minute Man III's which means they carry up to 3 warheads. That's a possibility of 2 - 6 targets assuming we saw all the missiles.
• Group of fake Marines claim that the intended targets were Iran and North Korea (Ep. 1.15)
  • The accuracy of this claim is not known at this time
• The ICBMs launched in the 9:02 episode were most unlikely the cause of the EMP. ICBM's do not arm until the rocket stages have separated and the warhead has spun up while on it's downward trajectory. What nation would launch an armed nuke when there's risk that the rocket stage could fail, causing a detonation inside it's own territory. The EMP occurred minutes after we saw the ICBMs launched.
  • A foreign power with intercontinental missile capability would have had to launch the nukes that caused the EMP. This would leave China and Russia as the only countries (other than NATO) with that ability. North Korea does not have that ability (yet). The producers also say the show takes place in real time (not in the future), so N Korea and Iran could not have done the EMP. Pakistan might have that ability now and since Afghanistan/Pakistan are the most likely places a foreign terrorist attack would originate, you can’t rule them out. China is sending aid, so it is doubtful they did it.
  • If a foreign power were to launch missiles at the US, you would have seen many more missiles responding back.
  • The foreign powers would know that the EMP would not affect our ability to respond back. The sole purpose of the EMP was to take out civilian communications, power, transportation, etc.
  • The EMP was most likely part of the master plan. After the cities were nuked and the resulting chaos began, the master plan could have been to get control of a missile silo or two and launch the missiles to cause an EMP and move the continental US back to the early 19th century, technology wise.
  • The prime suspect at this time is the contractor Jennings and Rall. They are based in Cheyenne. In 9:02, Mayor Greene said the nearest missile silos to Jericho where in S/E Wyoming. Jennings and Rall is based in Cheyenne in S/E Wyoming.
  • If you think about it, life in Jericho would a lot better if the EMP never happened. By now, they would have electricity, heat, running water, etc. The EMP essentially made sure that the parts of the country not destroyed by the nukes themselves were severely affected. The EMP caused far more damage nationwide than the nukes on the ground.

Unfortunately winds on the American continent blow upwards into Southern Ontario, the largest population region in the country so the Canadians could have many of their own problems.
• On the blackjack fairgrounds there is a message "Prime Minister Clements brings neutrality to vote." This could refer to Canada's Prime Minister not getting involved in the question of who is the legitimate president of the U.S. Technically this could complicate relief efforts since in order to send government relief aid into another country, permission is required by the federal government of that country.
• If the scope of the attacks is larger than Hawkins is telling us (or that he knows), Canadian cities could be hit as well. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are large population centers and Toronto is the 5th largest city in North America.
• Mexico City has the largest population of any city in the world, as well as the seat of government in Mexico; possibly could be hit.

• It has been suggested that the weapons detonated, such as the one in Hawkins possession, were around 20 kilotons in yield, about the same size at the Hiroshima and Nagasaki explosions in WW2.

• Hiroshima and Nagasaki were rebuilt within a decade of their destruction, with people now living there safely.
• Thus, the explosions, while designed to cause major damage in the "short term", would not necessarily adversely affect rebuilding / use long term.

• This article offers proposed outcomes for 20kt nuclear strikes on Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, and Washington D.C. - In all of these cases, the greatest danger is from the first batch of fallout, within 24 hours of the blast. The prevailing winds in most of the U.S. blow eastward, areas to the north, south, and west of the attacks have less to fear from fallout.

  • Why haven't these houses been raided for supplies? Presumably they would be full of canned and dry goods, cars and lawn equipment that could be siphoned for gas, etc.
  • Perhaps the canned goods that Kyle (thieving refugee) hoarded were stolen from these houses?
