If anyone, you should be calling Ted a coward!
Anyway, he was reluctant to say anything, but Russel did get Stanley and some other men safely out of New Bern and he warned Jake that his brother may be hurt. He doesn't want to be honest because Constantino would kill him if he were so. Nobody wants to die. Russel says in episode 1.20 that he had a wife and kids who he loves and tries to protect; he wants to make sure he's there for them and not get stuck in Constantino's torture chamber. He's being dishnosest for his family's sake.

Escape
A couple of New Bern speculations here.
First of all, how did Heather escape from New Bern and end up in, where was it, Nebraska? And will we ever hear from Ted again? Russel is relatively safe; he can't be accused by the New Berners of helping with the escape in 1.20 or anything else that would be considered treason. But Ted helped Jake and Hawkins, and there was a witness. That cop who Hakwins wanted to kill but Jake wouldn't let him, remember how he was still out and about at the end of episode 19? He could make Ted a wanted man, and if the majority of New Berners are as brutal as Constantino, they could kill him. Will he escape out of New Bern, will we never hear from him again, will he try to come to Jericho...? Any thoughts?

Friends in New Bern
"I agree ! they have the type of personalities that can "get er done !" in the remains of the real world." Ted was totally human. Jericho tends to have a lot of chaarcters which are understandable, but don't express real concerns like dying or not wanting to kill somebody. Ted was very realistic, how he ran away from Hawkins in 1.20 "Casus Beli". I'm not sure what I might have done. I hate most of the New Berners, but first of all I can't shoot and second, if I could shoot, I don't know if I would. Even for a good cause, it'd be extremely nerve-racking. Well I doubt I'd just get up and run like Ted did, I'd probably try to think of a different less violent plan, and Hawkins would have told me to shut up. : )
