Season 2 - CBS excuses for Cancellation
Feb 13 2008, 12:49 PM EST
Nice handy-cam work CBS! You want millions of viewers for something that went from professional production quality to pure Canadian super-low-budget tripe? Most soap operas have a better film quality than what you are dumping on us in these 7 episode limited run of season 2. This is what we are supposed to be convincing our friends to watch?!? The story in episode one was jumpy as heck, incomprehensible in parts, and was grossly conspicuous in the fact that they did not really talk about all the missing cast members (that did not die), like the children! It seems to me to be a pathetic attempt by CBS to have a 'legitimate' excuse for canceling it. The next two episodes will either make or break the entire Season One storyline. I would bet heavily on break, but I hold out hope for make. Did anyone also notice that there seems to be an increase in the ratio of commercial time to story time? I will be downloading a version of to see if this is just me or if they did stuff extra commercial time into it to pad their profit margins even farther. I will post a follow-up on this later. Bottom Line - If CBS cancels Jericho given the absolute shoe-string budget and large profit margins that they are now making on it, they are going to lose at least one permanent viewer. Just like HBO with their lies about the Deadwood movies to complete that canceled story. I can get their content for free off the web without them earning a solitary advertising dollar. If we allow this to happen then the whole Nuts for Jericho was for nothing, so don't let them keep their viewer number from the Season One days. That was for excellent quality at the costs it necessarily comes with. With the cheap-o version, they can't say they need any more viewers at all! P.S. I am Canadian. 42 out of 58 found this valuable. Do you? |

I cannot edit the above post (probably on a time delay).I just found out that the first episode of season 2 was a regular length episode (44:20). I guess is seemed like less since so little happened in it. 22 out of 30 found this valuable. Do you? |

I also thought season 2 isnt starting out as good as season 1 tomany missing people and way to much jumping around. Like Skyler where is she I thought she played a good role with dale. An is it just me or has Jake's acting went downhill? An where are hawkins kids? What about the chick doctor refugee I cant remember her name off the top my head but she is also missing. I can say looks like they went low budget i mean the train & tank and the napalm drop look 100% fake.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. This segment of Jericho was not at all like the first season. The first season was a bit hard to follow, but the episode last night was too jumpy and disconnected. The writer is to blame for this, but why didn't the producer or director say something about it while filming? Had this episode been fleshed out more, perhaps there would have been 8 episodes filmed and ready to go for season 2.

I'm so happy it's back it almost hurts, but you can see how a cancellation can hurt. The train and tank scene was pathetic. There have been scenes in movies (Lord of the Rings for example) where the use of models can go perfectly. A moving train colliding with a Abrams tank just aint one of them. I hope the reason for the missing actors was that they simply didn't have the contracts worked out entirely yet. They did mention Gale in the episode, so i would assume she will return. The others i just hope return Tuesday or sometime at least. Remember people, we gotta keep our hopes up. If CBS dumps Jericho, we could (God willing) be able to convince TNT in another campaign like the nuts one. Doubt it will happen, but remember : THIS IS JERICHO! Semper FI HJ P.S. Did anyone else notice how the patch over Becks' name on his uniform still said U.S ARMY? They managed to get their flag patches, why couldn't they change the U to an A? 16 out of 24 found this valuable. Do you? |

As for the missing actors, there are all kinds of reasons. Maybe because of the surprise of the Second Season they already had other commitments. Or their characters simply weren't needed in the first episode and they saved money that way. Or they couldn't work out the salary due to only seven episodes. Or to save money they simply did away with their characters, like Mrs. Green being permanently off screen "at the ranch." Hey, that's showbiz! In the Premiere of Season One they had actor Alex "I Am Damacles!" Carter as the Fire Chief and we never saw him again. I think he got the lead in another series that didn't even last one season.

I think I know what happened to the missing actors. In the Sunday paper they did a half page about the show coming back with the title 'nuts save Jericho' .& in it they said that there was a budget cut. & because of that & that the executive producer would only give them 7 episodes(instead of a full order of 22 like they would've gotten) the writers had to smush things together just incase they didn't come back there wouldn't be such a big cliff hanger, so we won't be seeing the smaller characters very much. I guess that also explains why it was so jumpy. It also said that if Jericho doesn't get the ratings this time there will be no more chances no matter how many peanuts we send. & some thing that I thought was cool, it said that there hasn't been a fan uproar over a tv show cancellation this big since 1984 when a letter-writing campaign saved "Cagney & Lacey" but that show had been on for 2 years already & was coming off an Emmy win for best tv drama & (as we already know) Jericho had 1 season & no Emmy.& yes I agree it was very jumpy. I had a hard time fallowing it, I’m going to watch it again soon. I told a whole bunch of people to watch it & about how good of a show it was. But after that I don't know what they'll think. hopefully it'll get better. Or If it comes back for good I'll get'em hooked then. 23 out of 23 found this valuable. Do you? |

If you will remember we were told the budget would be lower, possibly with fewer characters during these 7 episodes. The focus is on the underlying story and was kinda mentioned when Jimmy(I think) was in the hospital focusing on the the TV propaganda news show...saying " I want them to expalin the stars on the flag". Though the back drama is fun and interesting, the most important thing is what happened and why! Once the substance is understood and the show is continung then maybe the character interest will return. Stay behind this or the NUTS will have been for naught.

I think they hurried the storyline to get further down the road...there must be something important in seeing the ASA President?

CBS also set up this season on a path to failure with its later time slot in my opinion. I was expecting more. It's like they just spit this out so they could say, "We listen to the fans. We care."

Here's a couple of articles at Entertainment Weekly about the show. The first is a review of the first episode by an actual fan:http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20177810,00.html The second is an interview with the producer or whatever. Apparently they filmed TWO endings for the last episode--one if the Jericho is renewed because they got good ratings, and the other if the last episode is CURTAINS for the series: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20177606,00.html 25 out of 25 found this valuable. Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the first episode was jumpy. On further reflection, it almost feels like it was put together in a hurry and filmed in a bigger hurry. Maybe it was meant to be a promo piece and nobody thought to 'fix' it when it was accepted? As loyal fans of the show I feel we are entitled to more of a professional job than was shown on Feb 12. Hopefully we will get more professional episodes in the future. Otherwise, the show is doomed to failure.

I just recently got into Jericho. I watched the pilot online a couple weeks ago, just to see what it was about, and it really sucked me in right away. I wanted to know what happened to all the people and the town. I was quickly won over, but was disappointed when I heard it had been canceled, and then excited when I heard it was being brought back. It seems to me that CBS is just waiting to kill Jericho off. They only approve 7 new episodes, and tell the writers and producers to wrap it up (telling them to film two endings). I'm in the Midwest, so a 9:00 time slot is good, but in the east 10 seems a bit late for a large prime time audience. With only 7 episodes in the second season, the writers most likely felt like they had to cut down on as much of the side stories as they could get away with. If Dale and Skyler could be left out without hurting the story as a hole, then that's probably what had to be done. The writers probably felt like they needed to resolve the greater story, and with only 7 episodes to do that, they have to trim the fat a bit. It sucks to see that. All of the stories in the first season is what made this show so interesting, and I think the 2nd season will be lacking without all the different characters and sub-stories. I hope there are enough viewers and a 3rd season is approved. Then maybe we could see more of the characters return, and more sub-stories. P.S. I wish I could have been involved in the NUTS campaign with all of you. I most certainly would have sent in a whole package of Planters nuts. 21 out of 21 found this valuable. Do you? |

"It seems to me that CBS is just waiting to kill Jericho off. They only approve 7 new episodes, and tell the writers and producers to wrap it up (telling them to film two endings)."I'm afraid you are right. It seems to me that they have already decided 99% to cancel it again after this season and they taped two different endings on the 1% chance that the ratings would go through the roof and they would order another season. Unless someone like SciFi picks it up and runs with it, I think we can kiss Jericho goodbye after these 7 episodes. And it's a real shame when there are so many other shows out there that deserve to be dropped. 15 out of 22 found this valuable. Do you? |

To reiterate - with such a "Blair Witch" budget they should not be allowed by us, the fans, to cancel. I'll give it another two episodes before deciding if they really are trying to screw us, but I was hoping to see if anyone else agreed. I realize that the budget was to be reduced somewhat, in the form of secondary characters being left out. Their use of horrible computer graphics and not even using steady-cams (even homemade ones) is extreme. That's a low budget even by our (Canadian) standards of television. Hopefully it was just for Episode 1... 18 out of 18 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think that is one thing that makes me look forward to the next episode wanting to get all my questions answered. Like in season 1, I was going crazy wondering if Hawkins was a good guy or a bad guy and was really excited when I found out he was good.

I was thinking about that when I heard the times it was going to be on. 10 is usually when I watch a bit of the news & go to bed. Is watching shows that late normal for the East & the West too I guess? 16 out of 16 found this valuable. Do you? |
