"EMP... Do a little research before you engage your brain and exercise your finger to type.

Starting with a short intense burst of gamma rays, an EMP is produced from a nuclear detonation. As the gamma rays interact with the atoms in the air molecules (Compton Effect) they ionize the atmosphere and generate a powerful electric field. EMP strength is highly dependant on ALTITUDE! Above 10,000 feet an EMP is strongest and is significant at the surface. However, in between that EMPs are for the most part insignificant.

Hers is how am EMP works:
First of all, EMP is line of sight and that is the reason they are usually planned to be used as High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulses (HEMP).
Now then, you will hear a sharp crack in the distance and by the time your brain tells you that it wasn’t a gun shot, you will be living in the past. The world as you have grown up to live in will be shattered. Anything fluorescent will start to glow and the aroma or melted plastic will fill the air. Anything with a battery in it will be overloaded and your laptops will be NUKIFRIED. Then when you realize what just happened, you notice that all the cars are stopped, the trains aren’t moving and the airplanes are starting to fall from the sky like dead birds. No more internal combustion engines work (except a few diesels). You yourself won’t feel any different except for the fact that what you knew is GONE. Everything you know is obsolete and you must relearn how to do things. Department store refers shut down and food is going bad, meat is rancid, milk is sour and worst of all, my BEER IS GETTING WARM!

Research shows that a “single” EMP at 200 miles above Kansas can and will affect the ENTIRE United States. Small UNPLUGGED radios (like the FBR, CB and other handhelds will be mostly unaffected)."
USMarine,

Well summed up. Clear and concise. As an electrician I can say you are right on the money on that one.

Thank you! Pretty good explanation. I do presume that this is as a result of the question; why the insistence that an EMP is 100% successful?
electromagnetic radiation from an explosion (especially a nuclear explosion) or an intensely fluctuating magnetic field caused by Compton-recoil electrons and photoelectrons from photons scattered in the materials of the electronic or explosive device or in a surrounding medium. The resulting electric and magnetic fields "MAY" (emphasis added) couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges. (D)ifferent types of transistors and ICs show different sensitivity to electromagnetism; bipolar ICs and transistors are much less sensitive.
Support for the 100% comment.

EMPs are NOT 100% effective as they are Line of Sight (LOS). One of the easiest steps to combat EMPs is to have your electronics in the basement or a cellar type room underground. You can use surge protectors with fast risetime protectors as well and they are relatively inexpensive to buy. Although these are NOT 100%effective, they are better than nothing.

Ground Wave Emergency Network (GWEN) was specifically designed to work after a nuclear strike to the US. In tests that the US Navy conducted on EMPs, battery powered VHF solid state radios and disconnected radios sustained no damage.

Basically said, low air burst or ground burst detonation effects reach no further than the blast effects or about 30 miles. These are referred to as “City Busters”.

Kind of what we all said way back when 9:02 hit the air waves. Don't let me get you down. Glad your here!
