As an American Sign Language student, I am very disappointed in the fate of Ms. Stern's character. To my knowledge, Bonnie was the only ASL-Deaf character in current prime-time programming.

I think the actor playing her brother Stanley (Richard Beyer?) deserves some props too. He really made me believe that sign language was as second nature to him as it was to Bonnie and that he'd been raising her since she was four years old, after their parents were killed in a car accident. Bonnie wasn't just making hand gestures to Stanley, she was having a CONVERSATION with him--there's a big difference. Stanley's reactions required good acting in order not to look like he was just acting. The sign language was an integral part of the intimacy between them and it was thoroughly believable.

frankly, while i understand it's always disappointing when your favorite character leaves the show.... it has to be someone. are you really going to take it personally that they killed her? i think it's a postive thing that they thought to include her on the show in the first place. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. She didn't only "speak" using her hands (and voice), her ability to express ANYTHING with expressions was amazing. Who needs to speak verbally, when it can be said so well with just a look?!
She was one of, if not THE favorite character on Jericho. And she was so spunky. She will most definately be missed!

They "included" her because she is such a fantastic actress and fit the part so well. It wasn't charity, she earned the part. And she was a huge part of the whole JERICHO family. And Jericho is scarred by her loss.

i dont think jericho watch meant the comment as a slight, i understood it as being conscientious enough to be aware not everyone has equal opportunities in life and to include a character like bonnie was a big step in the right direction...

so yeah. i thought it was cool they included a real life sort of thing to the character. deaf people are everywhere and they live normal lives too. kudos to whomever thought to select such a compelling actress as ms, stern onto the show though!

Deaf people can do just about everything that anyone else can. The only limits they might have would be those they impose on themselves. That can change if they choose.

She was a fantastic character on the show, deaf or not.
I was horrified at how and when she died but it was incredible drama and she starred in it.
But no one is coming back from the "dead" unless we save the show, so let's save the show!

You're right. I loved it when she would make the sign for idiot and them Mimi finally told Stanley she knew what it meant.
I loved the way the three of them interacted with each other overall.
Bonnie, the country girl with the determination and the grit, Stanley with his easy going, laid back way and Mimi was hilarious trying to talk her self into killing that chicken all the while cleaning her nails with the hatchet.
What a great show! What a great cast!
We have to get this show back on the air!

You're right too. It was so believable the way those three acted together. I was watching season 1 and it Shoshanna's part wasn't written for a deaf girl, she came in to audition and she blew them away. So really it was her acting that landed her a part on this awesome show, when the part wasn't even written for her. She just did such a good job that they knew they found Bonnie!

I sure am going to miss her! She was fantastic. (Maybe some "flashbacks"?)

That would be awesome if they did flashbacks. Or do you remember the episode in season one, where Emily was picturing her wedding day, and she was imagining what would be happening every moment, and they did that? Maybe they can do that on Stanley and Mimi's wedding day. YOu know, imagine what it would be like to have Bonnie there? Probably sounds creepy now that I typed it. lol.

That would be great! They could use flashbacks in a lot on instances. (for ALL the dead and "removed")

Doesn't sound creepy at all really. We are talking about a TV show. So, anythhing could be written in so this bright young talented lady could continue on this show.
I'd even be willing to have the writers start again from the end of season one and pick up the way they did the show from the beginning, using each individual and introducing you to them and their personal take on what's happening etc.
That was what made the first season so superior to the second hacked up session. I'm still upset over them hacking it up like that but then I'm sure they would have done it differently if they'd had the budget and the time.
From what I read from a transcript of a real chat session with Karim Zarik, they had a lower budget to work with but the cast had a great time filming it anyhow.
Pardon my getting carried away here. I tend to do that when I feel passionately about things.
I think having the presence of Bonnie there for Stanley's and Mimi's wedding day would be fantastic!
( Karim Zarik did mention something about a possible wedding in the future in that transcript I read )
