On The Beach

The Pilot of "Jericho" reminded me of the famous Gregory Peck film, "On the Beach." Here's a plot summary from the IMDB:

In 1964, nuclear war wipes out humanity in the northern hemisphere; one American submarine finds temporary safe haven in Australia, where life-as-usual covers growing despair. In denial about the loss of his wife and children in the holocaust, American Captain Towers meets careworn but gorgeous Moira Davidson, who begins to fall for him. The sub returns after reconnaissance a month (or less) before the end; will Towers and Moira find comfort with each other?

I've seen the film a hundred times but this is a polar opposite. In On the Beach nobody survives. In Jericho we have pockets of disconnected survivors waitng for FEMA and reconnection with the world. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Kind of like "On The Beach," but much more relevant to themes today and how real people would react to a disaster on that scale-- which is probably more realistic than total nuclear war. Do you find this valuable?

Judy, et al,
I hope all'a y'all aren't waiting for FEMA to bail you out of Jericho's, or any present day problems. We US Citizens have become helpless; we expect the government to bail us out of everything, then get angry when they can't. "It's the government's fault I live in a hurricane zone." "I built my house above the flood plain, like the government said; why is it gone?" "It's your fault I was driving drunk and hurt myself; I expect the system to pay for my injuiries."
We have troops meddling in virtually every country in the world, then wonder why they hate us; the world is too small now to be isolationist, but we can't meddle everywhere and expect to make friends. Keep on voting the way your Dad, Grand Dad, Great Grand Dad, and Great Great Grand Dad voted and thought; you'll remain helpless, with the whole world angry at you.
I hope that's enought food for thought for a few of you. If not, I've got more.

You still need some kind of organized militia or security to stop roving hordes of bandits. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Wow. You've definately got a point. The people depend too much on our government.

(I hate almost every new law the government has made in the past few years...we'er going down the WRONG ROAD.)

Speaking of laws and government... (I know this is a small law and it doesn't affect me in the least) I hate the law that you have to be eight years old or eighty pounds to be out of a booster seat in the car. It is such a stupid law! No kid wants to ride in a booster seat! I never had to when I was a kid. For the rest of the world, who are cowards, boster seats are alright, but I'm not afriad of car accidents. Some people may want and appreciate booster seats for their kids or siblings but as for me I say: my business is my own, not the government's! Any self-resecting kid hates being imprisoned in a booster seat.

I don't beleive in chance and luck and "what if". I beleive that if something happens, it was meant to happen--it's destiny. Of course I don't want a car accident to happen. And of course I'll put my kids in booster seats if the law says so. My point isn't really against booster seats--my point is, fewer people would be afraid of fewer things if they had faith in something and if they knew that destiny was in bigger hands.

And yes, you can make choices and basically do whatever you want in life...but you're still not controlling your destiny. When I don't have a migrane I can try to explain this statement. As it is...Ow!!!

I've commented on this back in Nov. 06, but the story line is actually similar to the novel "Alas,Babylon" by Pat Frank. Some of us even asked the producers if this was correct, unfortunatly, we were not. The story of Jericho is origional, but the writers did mention they were familiar with the novel. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
