Are the writers really that clever?
Dec 8 2006, 5:06 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 8 2006, 5:06 PM EST
A lot of people have sophisticated theories about the plot, but errors in the production show that the writers and director are not that bright. Did everyone notice the new Chevy truck used to search for the killer? Others have noted that the Hummers all ran. I would like to think that the show's producers have a really great script, but the viewers may be more clever than they are. I agree with those who say the episodes need to get out of the town; I get bored with the soap-opera sub-plots. 8  out of 15 found this valuable. Do you?

Monday-morning quarterbacking is easier than playing the game, too! I thought I had them because there were no sirens, no State of National Emergency EAS warnings on television, etc. but the bombs were PLANTED, rather than flown in, so there would have been no knowledge of them until they blew. If the FBI guy can have a PC that is protected, homeland security can have it too. And, I have always been suspicious of Gray, so I think he could be in on the whole plot (which may be why he was running for mayor in the first place). 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Many military vehicles are equipped with EMP protection. I believe those were Humvees, not Hummers 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yeah! I think Gray is a racist AND a xenophonbe. He's a Jericho is for Jerichoans type. I guarantee you that if starving refugees show up, he'd kill them rather than help them. Betcha he's Klan.

I don't know if we even have to go that far. Someone else posted a CIA vs FBI type plot to this and that Gray could be CIA. I am just saying if that could be true, why couldn't he be so in on the plan he has a special EMP proof engine. Then again, why hasn't anyone else in town questioned this?

You people need to do some research on EMP. It would not cause all things computer to fail.
EMP burns things up by building a charge on long cable runs, i.e. the power grid. Cars are not connected to the grid and the electronics are fairly well protected by the steel body of the vehical. A EMP pulse is measured in microvolts and unless the car was extremely close to the blast it would not burn up all the electronics. Your car might stall out while the pulse passed by, but more than likely it would start up, same thing with a PC, it might be disrupted and reboot and you might lose data you were working on.
Street lights would probably burn out from the increased load from the grid, I don't think the bulbs are surge protected.

There are some products the police have been testing that can travel under a car and cause a massive EMP UNDER the car which will cause it to die, allowing them to apprehend vehicals in a chase. This EMP is created a few feet from the electronics of the car and is much more powerful than a EMP from hundres or thousands of miles away would be.

The part in Jericho where the wrist watches stopped is also total bull....

They were hummers but were intended to be Humvees. The HMMWV (its real name) has a sloping back or a pickup bed w/2 doors. This was the 5(really 6) door model sold to civs between 99 and 06. The civ Hummers also benefited from some of the HMMWV hardening. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I beleive that if a newer vehicle was parked in lets say a metal pole barn, of which there would be many in a rural area, it may still work. Wouldn't the metal in the barn work as a Faraday cage and deflect the EMP? Do you find this valuable?

Probably, I am more interested in what caused the EMP, I am betting the missiles that were launched, this would also support the insurection theory :)

some good points made here in replies to the original comment, 21+ years in the military I know our HUMVEE's were hardened against some EMP attack as are our aircraft etc. And the post by anonymous about "EMP proximity" is correct. I recently watched a Discovery Weapons Tech episode at White Sands on testing of a EMP device in which a car was driven under the device as it went off. It died but the producers said later they were able to start the car after changing the ignition module. Anything not directly connected to the power grid would also survive destruction. Old style diesle engines would not be affected by EMP either. As far as who or what caused the EMP? My theory is that our own goernment did it in a last ditch effort at preventing a second wave attack, and to put the general populace and any enymies on our soil or invading agencies who would capitalize on our misery would be diminished in power.
And I agree with the "Soap Opera" sub-plot comment but it is important to the producers and sponsers to keep woman interested in watching the show after all woman by product and that is how TV makes its money.

1. The results of EMP on all kinds of stuff is merely conjecture and it ranges widely on this site. 2. I am a female and I squirm through the soap opera portion of the show waiting for the good stuff like where the missiles came from, what is in Robert Hawkins' basement, and the real dirt on Jake. I'm also always ready to boo the reactionary new mayor.

Yeah. If we believe Robert Hawkins he was sent undercover to Jericho to find people helping terrorists. I still the nefarious terrorist-helpers will turn out to be Ravenwood, a wonderful simile of the Blackwater folks.

i do agree there are a few error in the show (what show does'nt) but even newer vehicals can be configuered to turn over with out help from the computer, all you need to do is properly bypass the CPU electrical system and run it stright to the alternator. ask any mechanic, but then again, they did not show the characters doing these modifications. and one more thing too, Gray Anderson is too much of an idiot to be in on the plot. look at the way he handled the "FAKE" U.S. soldiers. i may be wrong, cant wait for the next episode! I'm not so sure about that. The Starfish Prime nuclear tests over Johnson Atoll knocked out vehicles in Hawaii, over 900 miles away. Now that was in 1962 so while we can't know for sure what an.EMP blast will do to your PC, its a safe bet that it could be likened to the effects of a lightning strike.

The wrist-watch part was, I'd imagine, a nod to Goldeneye.
