40. RE: Well, whatever's going on...

"When one part of a grid is damaged, it causes other areas to be overloaded. Overload protection would kick in and shut down more of the grid. This is what happened in the 2003 New York blackout. Yes, we would need to reroute the power around the damaged areas. The power might shut down immediately and it could take months to restore it.ah, then we here in ALX are fortunate. they've been bitching about how the coal burner is still mostly manual. the city's been really slow in modernizing it (the thing sat idle for almost 20 yrs and was activated last summer due to a "severe power shortage".) although it must be connected to the computers (as they've used it recently), i doubt highly that it would be overly difficult to turn it on. labor intensive, and producing a great deal of concentrated swearing, but not overly complex. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Unfortunately such is not the case everywhere! Illinois is a VERY backward state!!! Many of the things you wrote about would be discouraged and taught as wrong. Archery would be suspect and GUNS - heven forbid - don't even mention teaching someone to use a GUN. OH MY GOD!!! That is a "sin"! If our state government had their way, no one in Illinois would own let alone even SEE a gun! (for any reason). The GOVENOR OF CHICAGO, Blago, would totally freak. 06/12/07 4:01pm centralouch. move to Virginia. see the sights, survive nuclear attack. hmm...we should put that on our license plates instead of this "virginia is for lovers" thing... "How about in the long term?? Assuming DC doesn't get nuked, how would you get heat or get fuel for cooking?? I am not talking about age here. I am asking in reference to urban survival. There are no forests to cut wood in. Gas stations are out of gas. The power grid is shot. You have your furniture - last resort. Do you read newspapers or magazines? Roll them up tightly and use them as a "log". Just have to be careful what you burn them in. Get a grill. You can cook outside. Fireproof your home. You can also use candles to heat. (remember -fireproof your home, watch out for pets and children also) Wear more layers. Keep doors and windows closed as much as possible. Use sunlight coming through the windows to help heat. Insulate, put plastic around windows, etc. There should be a site on line somewhere to look it up. 06/12/07 4:23pm central 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Furniture would be gone in a few days and the chemicals in the wood may make you sick. Candles don't give much heat when it is ten below zero outside. Rolling up the magazines and newspapers is a good point. As is insulating and fireproofing the area. "Use sunlight coming through the windows to help heat." This is what I was getting at. Passive solar (no solar panels needed) heaters can provide much of your heat. Solar cookers can be used to bake or roast food. They can be built out of materials that many of us have on hand. The information is available online and in library books. Online search terms I found best are "solar cookers", "solar window boxes", and "passive solar." 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Rolling up the magazines and newspapers is a good point. As is insulating and fireproofing the area. There are also specially made "blankets" to be used by hunters and hikers that can be easily packed in a small place to protect from the cold and "fire blankets"which are commonly used by firefighters. Each can be made into a "tent" and with the use of a candle and tin can can heat a small area. Some of these tips can be found in hunting magazines, etc, These , and other supplies can be found in sporting goods departement at most stores. I think this line of conversation is very interesting and would like to learn more, please. 06/12/07 5:29pm central (ps you might note that I mentioned the furniture would be a last resort) Do you find this valuable? |

and if you have an emergency kit in your car, you probably have a thermal blanket (a cheap but effective stand in for a decent hunting blanket). and you can siphon gas to burn. you must burn it carefully, and ensure that you can vent the fumes.

Yes, I did notice you listed the furniture as a last resort.
I have one of those special "blankets." I recently purchased a ''box stove" (small wood burning cast iron) as an alternate heat source (supposed to heat 800 sq. ft) I have to research installation and building code information before I can install it. You might like Louis Lamour's books. Although they are westerns, he gives accurate information on surviving in the wilderness. I have websites saved on my computer concerning the solar heating and cooking. I want to install some of these on my house. Would you like me to list some of the sites for you? No, I would never try to burn gas. I saw my dad on fire after he spilled gas on himself while working on a car. The fumes are also very dangerous. So is accidentally ingesting it. Remember, you may not have medical assistance available. Do you find this valuable? |

"Yes, I did notice you listed the furniture as a last resort.Yes, please list some sites for me. I would really appreciate that. Thank you for your help. Also, I would love to have a wood/pellet burning stove but can't afford it right now. My daughter's in-laws have a wood burner outside. The heat is mixed with water (steam/humidity) and "pumped " into the house. Of course that would require electricity or a generator (which I do have). The village probably would not allow such a device for my home tho, I'm sure. (We have no village real estate taxes here. It is made up by higher gas bills.) Such a devise would be great - less threat of house fire and cleaner. Thanks again. 0612/07 7:15pm central Do you find this valuable? |

"well, if it came to it...gas might save you. it's all about ventillation."You might be able to soak wood a little with the gas or some oil and get a fire going (away from the car of course) Learn how to build a lean-to, even to block wind from the car. Watch the smoke. Do you find this valuable? |

"i believe that this should have been mentioned long ago:It would also be a good idea to have a few hand and foot warmers on hand. They are small packets and are very inexpensive. And always wear a hat of some kind. A complete change of clothing wouldn't hurt. It might be a bit cold while changing but it would be better than staying in wet (?) clothing. Become a "quick-chance artist". The KNIFE -- not a bad idea - to cut wood and shavings, etc. 06/12/07 9:45pm central Do you find this valuable? |

It can even be used to summon help (by firing off rounds - I believe 3 shots in rapid sucession is supposed to mean "help". There is a book on solar heating I think you would like. I will look up the information and get back to you about it and the websites soon.
By the way, I found the box stove at Lowe's home improvement store for $120.00. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"well, if it came to it...gas might save you. it's all about ventillation."No, gas burns too fast to use for heat. Lighting gas is too risky. Try the windproof lighter some one else suggested or carry waterproof matches for lighting fires. You can always carry some dry tinder (leaves, twigs, bits of old bird's nests) with you. Gasoline burns are extremely painful. My dad only survived because the right person was there to save him. Do you find this valuable? |

Only problem was that my brother was in too much trouble to stop firing when he needed to use it. He was under attack by a pack of wild dogs.
