Tonight's Address by the President
Jan 10 2007, 10:21 PM EST | Post edited: Jan 10 2007, 10:21 PM EST
Tonight's Address by President Bush (excepting the location and duration) was very similar to the President's Address in Jericho. It could well be that based upon the Jericho commentator's comments..."the President is going out on a limb...." that we are watching a reaction to something very similar to what President Bush is doing now. Now let's don't get into if the present policy is right or wrong, unles it is neccessary in allegory, as I did ...we are talking about a TV program not debating real life policy. 8  out of 13 found this valuable. I agree generally that there is a real danger of civil war in today's politically polarized USA. And if that is what is happening in the Jericho series (as I suspect), I think it is especially apt that the series focuses on how a second civil war would affect real human lives and families. 2  out of 3 found this valuable. True if people keep up the personal attacks, but remember that "yellow journalism" and this this type of intrigue has being going on forever!

I don't remember it ever being this bad. I can "feel" the "hate" when they talk about and to each other. It seems to be getting so much worse and so much more personal - even including the family members - who aren't even in politics. And the gap is growing even wider.

I won't disagree, but today the news can and does cover more....what used to be "forgotten" is "dredged up" night after night. In that kind of atomsphere....a created for TV atomsphere....no one can make a mistake or they are toast! There is no longer time to take a breath and think.....that makes any response personal, even eviseral(spelling minus 1), because you have to protect yourself(instinct takes over).

True! The media are a BIG part of the problem. They expose, blow up and continue or create the feud - for the ratings. (And bias) And the "innocent" suffer. AND so does the country! The polarization is going to destroy the country by making us seem to be unable to even get along with each other. How can others respect us if we can't even respect ourselves and others?

"How can others respect us if we can't even respect ourselves and others?" Bingo! Respect is number one without that we are toast!

How true!

I personally have a nasty opinion of the media. They're too biased for anyones good. And (no offense to any democrats who read this), i feel papers like the NYTimes and San Francisco Chronicles and channels like MSNBC and NBC are so biased i don't see how it's barely legal in my books! I'll even admit, FOX news can be biased at times, especially when O'reily comes on.

It used to be that there was the fairness doctine....that was stripped away. In those days, the media "was biased" but had to show the other side. I personally think the slanted was mostly liberal theninthose days.....today with O'Reily et al.......well let's just say there is little unbaised reporting except maybe on local news.....everything is politically charged! It needs to end. NOW! Although I know it is inherently difficult to get deep into a subject and not allow some of your own subjective thought be interjected...the news must become more objective and not as opinionated!

You are so right! But the media speaks to those who will bring them the greater ratings. If they can create conflict with the "news", it will draw in more viewers. Giving both sides of an issue only balances the scales. All forms of media will be on the same, level, playing field and the other media will grab as much of the ratings. So they have learned to use their own personal bias to relate to others who feel the same, knowing that if they can get enough of them to support them, ratings will increase. So they feed the division.

What you say is true. What do we do to interject altruism into the mix again?

wow I don't know that it's possible to do that in todays climate, I know my generation has been just floating along and not really working for any type of a change. And too many in my generation are willing to just sit back and not shake the tree. The hope may come in my younger son's generation. (he's 17) They protest they vent they tend to not trust the goverment or the media in any way shape or form. Think of the 60's and 70's. If you don't trust the media and enough people begin to feel the same way then it will force a change. I think that now that the internet has become a household necessity they are really the first generation that has been able to go out there and find the truth easily for themselves. It will be interesting to see what they do with it. We have just gotten too complacent allowing the media to spoon feed us whatever it likes. Maybe they can force the change I really hope so.

Shouldn't the media list their "reports" as fiction, not fact?

Or when announcing them, put a runner under it that says, "WARNING: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL NEWS REPORT, JUST A BIASED OPINION OF ACTUAL NEWS. TO VIEW ACTUAL NEWS, PLEASE PICK UP REMOTE AND PUST BUTTONS FOR ACTUAL NEWS CHANNEL."
