Small city logistics
Feb 17 2007, 2:27 AM EST
I live in a town with a similar size population to Jericho (4,322). Supplies for various needs of the town:
Gas stations - 6 Bars - 4 Churches - 3 Grocery stores - 1 Nearest hospital - 12 miles I can see them having gas for a while, even alcohol. Not food. Or proper medical facilities. Our grocery store, by itself, would only feed our town for about two weeks. 20 out of 22 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree with your figured, however, you must take into account that Jericho does have numerous farms (Stanley's is the largest), that could supply food, and, remember, about a week or so after the blasts, a train showed up with a bunch of supplies (even though that eventually got taken by Mitch and Jonah.) I could see how they would make it last as long as they did.
My bet: they were rationing the food that they had. Still, there is hunger in the series. Remember in Red Flag when everyone's complaining that they deserve the food from the drop because they're hungry? So, your figures are right, but there's other stuff to take into account. About medical facilities, they ran out of antibiotics in the series, remember? So, I think that they did a good job of representing that fact. Do you find this valuable? |

Your town only had 3 churches??The town I grew up in had ~1200ppl, and there were at least 4 churches w/in town limits when I was growing up. (Baptist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Pentecostal) The closest town approx Jericho's size currently has 11 churches. (Cobden, IL is where I grew up. Anna IL, according to Wikipedia, had 5136 in 2000 census. for the churches in Anna, I used http://www.churchangel.com/WEBIL/anna.htm ) Do you find this valuable? |

I live in a town with about 6500 people we have:2 gas stations 1 bar 9 churches 1 grocery store 2 small medical clinics and a few family docs 0 farms But all that mean is that every town is different. Gas is going to go quicker than you think running generators and pre-computerized car is going to burn up 500 gallons in no time. Alcohol the show got that one right the bar was almost always pack in the first few days after the attack it would go quick people are not going to want to think about what happened. Medical facilities are based on need so it depends if I broke a bone I think I would be ok but if I lost a finger cutting wood I think it would be gone for ever. Food and water are the biggest factor and are dependent on location. A farm town has a chance of surviving chickens are the best bet for a steady supply for food eggs and a fairly quick reproduction cycle with a smaller amount of out put of food compared to other animals. Grains store well if protected from weather and infestation. There first winter would be the hardest without the proper preparation of storage and rationing as well as the logistics of heating homes. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Speaking of churches, I've been wondering why at least one church doesn't figure more prominently in the storyline. After something like the attacks, people are going to be seeking answers and comfort, and they'll turn to two places-- the bar, and the church. At the very least, a pastor or priest would step up and take a prominent leadership role that we should've seen by now.

You also have to remember that this is a huge agriculture center. I'm from Kansas and I've been to Oakley (the town based on Jericho) and it has 3 or 4 grain elevators. The town I'm from (about 4300 people) has enough grain stored in the elevators to feed our town for years. On top of this, we have 3 cattle feed yards within about 8-10 miles of town that totals about 200,000 head of cattle. That, along with pig farms and wheat and corn fields, the food situation would not be a problem for people living in towns roughly the size of mine.
