Poor Thing!
Mar 10 2007, 9:47 PM EST Bless Your Heart! That's a Southern "verbal bandage" that supposed to fix all things. The producers have kind of put you between a rock (April) and a hard thing (Mary). Get it? I, personally, don't care for your character AT THIS TIME, but, I have faith you'll pull through and surprise us all. Maybe Eric could be our 7th President? He is unemployed, isn't he? 3 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 27 2007, 2:15 PM EDT Bless your heart again. That Anonymous comment left in March was actually from me. I'd never heard of Kenneth Mitchell prior to Jericho but I think he's doing a bang-up job playing Eric. Now that his "father" is gone I think Kenneth's character is going to realize (if he hasn't already) that he's been living his life based on the expectations of others and to make up for his brother's shortcomings. It will be interesting to watch Kenneth try to find out who Eric really is. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

With every step forward Eric makes toward being his own person, you can see him struggling with the fact that he is hurting and disappointing other people, and Kenneth uses his limited screen time well in carrying that across. Eric is taking responsibility for having painted himself into an unhappy corner in life by trying to do what other people think is right; he knows things that could deflect the blame from himself (April filing for divorce), but he says nothing. He's struggling with his envy of his brother, but he follows when he knows Jake is right, and he stands up (against popular opinion) when he knows others are wrong (going to Jonah for help and saving the bridge). The agony he goes through over losing April and the baby--an especially amazing performance knowing that Kenneth and his wife were also pregnant at the time--is heartwrenching, but more than that in the way you can see the layers of conflict he feels. It's not just about April, or the baby, or his guilt, or the final destruction of that future he once saw for himself; it's also about his alienation from his mother (April's best friend) and his feelings of aloneness. The dynamic that is being set up for season 2, with Johnston's death and the two brothers sharing their grief and responsibilities, has me sooooo excited to see what Kenneth will bring to the character next. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Poor Thing!
Aug 28 2007, 6:56 PM EDT You've nailed the Eric character very well. Kenneth is great and I'm kind of glad to have had this opportunity to rewatch the episodes. I spent the first time through loving Jake and thinking of Eric as a suck-up. The second time through I'm actually "seeing" Eric and realizing what an amazing job Kenneth is doing portraying him like you said in his "limited" screen time. I was tickled to find out who he was married to also. I loved her in "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Charms for the Easy Life" and I remember her in an episode of Ghost Whisperer. RE: Poor Thing!
Aug 30 2007, 10:43 AM EDT That's the thing with a show as complex in plot & characters as "Jericho" is--you really need to watch things over again to catch all of the nuance that lies behind the first impressions. There isn't one character in the lot who is as simple as you might first think; they all have their struggles, and they're all starting to rediscover who they are and who they need to be to get by in the world. This show makes those transitions truly interesting by creating an "end to life as we know it" backdrop as a catalyst for change. Thinking again about Eric, where would he be now if the bombs hadn't dropped? If April had pushed forward with the divorce--and I believe that she would have, even with the pregnancy, if the bombs hadn't dropped--how would Eric have dealt with it? I think that it speaks volumes about his character (and Kenneth's acting skills) that it was Eric who finally stood up and declared what no one wanted to admit: that the marriage was over long ago, and that staying together wouldn't make anyone happy. He was no longer the guy who could be counted on to hold appearances and a need for approval above all else, and that's when he became a force to be reconed with. 2 out of 2 found this valuable.
