If he had any integrity at all, he would have been honest about what was going on in New Bern, and helped them work out a plan to deal with Constantino.

Anyway, he was reluctant to say anything, but Russel did get Stanley and some other men safely out of New Bern and he warned Jake that his brother may be hurt. He doesn't want to be honest because Constantino would kill him if he were so. Nobody wants to die. Russel says in episode 1.20 that he had a wife and kids who he loves and tries to protect; he wants to make sure he's there for them and not get stuck in Constantino's torture chamber. He's being dishnosest for his family's sake.
